Abhimanyu and the Wheel

Mahabharata, Drona Parva 45

The story · English

King Dhritarashtra asked Sanjaya about the youthful son of Subhadra, Abhimanyu. He wanted to know which heroes of his own army had surrounded the young man, who had penetrated their array in a chariot drawn by powerful steeds and was fighting with a skill that honored his lineage. Sanjaya replied that Abhimanyu had used his sharp arrows to force many kings to retreat from the fight. Eventually, six great car-warriors closed in on him: Drona, Kripa, Karna, Aswatthaman, Vrihadvala, and Kritavarman. The other soldiers supported Jayadratha, who was keeping the rest of the Pandavas away, by rushing against Yudhishthira. Many of them, drawing bows six cubits long, showered Abhimanyu with arrows like torrents of rain.

Despite the onslaught, Abhimanyu paralyzed the great bowmen with his own shafts. He pierced Drona with fifty arrows and Vrihadvala with twenty. He struck Kritavarman with eighty shafts and Kripa with sixty. Abhimanyu then turned his attention to Aswatthaman, hitting him with ten golden-winged arrows shot from a fully stretched bow. In the midst of the chaos, he also struck Karna with a bright, forceful arrow. He did not stop there; he felled the horses and charioteers of Kripa and then pierced Kripa in the center of his chest with ten arrows. In full view of the sons of Dhritarashtra, Abhimanyu slew the brave Vrindaraka, that enhancer of the fame of the Kurus.

While Abhimanyu continued to fearlessly slay the enemy, Aswatthaman pierced him with twenty-five small arrows. Abhimanyu quickly returned the fire with many whetted shafts. Aswatthaman then struck him with sixty fierce, sharp arrows, but Abhimanyu did not tremble; he stood immovable like the Mainaka mountain. With great energy, he responded by piercing Aswatthaman with seventy-three straight arrows with golden wings. Seeing his son in danger, Drona intervened and pierced Abhimanyu with a hundred arrows. Aswatthaman, wanting to rescue his father, added another sixty arrows to the youth's wounds. Karna and Kritavarman also joined in, striking him with twenty-two and fourteen broad-headed arrows respectively.

Vrihadvala and Kripa added more shafts, but Abhimanyu pierced each of the six in return with ten arrows. Then Vrihadvala, the ruler of the Kosala, struck Abhimanyu in the chest with a barbed arrow. In a swift retaliation, Abhimanyu destroyed the ruler's horses, his standard, his bow, and his charioteer. Left without his car, the ruler of the Kosala took up a sword and wished to cut off Abhimanyu's head. However, Abhimanyu pierced him in the chest with a strong arrow. As the ruler of the Kosala fell with a riven heart, ten thousand other kings broke and fled the battlefield, leaving behind words that were hostile to the interests of Duryodhana.

After the flight of the kings, Abhimanyu continued to paralyze the remaining warriors with rain-like showers of arrows. He turned his focus back to Karna, piercing him with a barbed arrow and then following it with fifty more shafts to anger him still further. Karna responded in kind, piercing Abhimanyu with fifty arrows. Though covered in wounds, Abhimanyu looked exceedingly beautiful. He then caused Karna to be bathed in blood. Both warriors, mangled and bleeding, resembled a couple of flowering Kinsukas. Abhimanyu then slew six of Karna's counsellors along with their horses and charioteers, while fearlessly countering other bowmen with ten arrows each, a feat that seemed wonderful.

Abhimanyu then slew the youthful Aswaketu, son of the ruler of the Magadhas, with six straight shafts, along with his four horses and charioteer. He also slew the Bhoja prince of Martikavata with a razor-headed arrow and shouted loudly while scattering shafts in all directions. In response, the son of Duhsasana pierced Abhimanyu's four horses with four arrows and his charioteer with one, and wounded Abhimanyu with ten arrows. Abhimanyu pierced the son of Duhsasana with ten fleet shafts and told him that his father had fled like a coward, and that it was well the youth himself knew how to fight. He warned him that he would not escape with his life today, and shot a long arrow at him, which the son of Drona cut with three shafts.

Leaving Aswatthaman alone, Abhimanyu turned to Salya and pierced him in the chest with nine arrows equipped with vulture's feathers. He then cut Salya's bow and killed both of his charioteers before piercing Salya with six iron shafts. Salya was forced to leave his steedless car for another. Abhimanyu then slew five more warriors: Satrunjaya, Chandraketu, Mahamegha, Suvarchas, and Suryabhasa, and finally pierced the son of Suvala. The son of Suvala pierced him with three arrows and told Duryodhana that they must all grind the youth down together, or, fighting them singly, he would slay them all. He urged the king to find a way to slay him, taking counsel with Drona, Kripa and others.

Karna said that Abhimanyu was grinding them all and asked Drona for a way to kill the youth. Drona, however, expressed admiration for Abhimanyu. He noted that no one had found a flaw in the youth's defense and praised his lightness of hand and speed, comparing him to a lion. Drona remarked that Abhimanyu's skill was so great that there was no difference between him and his father, Arjuna. Karna, however, confessed that the fierce, fire-like arrows of the youth were weakening his heart. Drona smiled and explained that Abhimanyu's armor was impenetrable because he knew the science of defensive mail, a skill Drona had taught Arjuna.

Drona advised Karna that while Abhimanyu was invincible with a bow, they could win by destroying his equipment. Following this advice, Karna cut Abhimanyu's bow, while Kritavarman killed his horses and Kripa killed his charioteers. The six warriors then ruthlessly showered the bowless and carless youth with arrows. Undeterred, Abhimanyu took up a sword and shield and leaped into the air like Garuda. But Drona cut the hilt of his sword and Karna cut his shield. Coming down to earth unhurt, Abhimanyu took up a car-wheel and rushed at Drona. Covered in dust and blood, roaring like a lion, he looked resplendent as he fought with the wheel.
