The Vow to Kill Jayadratha
Mahabharata, Drona Parva 143
The story · English
Sanjaya describes to King Dhritarashtra the terrifying power of Arjuna. When Arjuna stretched his bow, the sound was like the call of Death or a thunderclap, sending the Kaurava army into a panic. Arjuna moved with such speed and skill that he seemed to be everywhere at once, his hands moving too quickly for the eye to follow as he launched shafts. He invoked the invincible Aindra weapon, unleashing thousands of fiery arrows that filled the sky like meteors. This barrage destroyed the darkness created by the Kaurava archers, just as the sun disperses the night. The heat of his weapons sucked the lives out of the opposing warriors like the summer sun drying up the waters of lakes and tanks.
Arjuna became like Death embodied, cutting through the ranks of the enemy. He severed the heads of kings and the limbs of elephant-riders, horsemen, and foot-soldiers. The battlefield became a gruesome sight, strewn with the trunks of elephants and the severed heads of warriors. Sanjaya describes a horrific river of blood and marrow that flowed across the field, where bodies floated, hundreds of chariots formed its rafts, vultures were its sharks and the howling of jackals filled the air. The Kuru army was gripped by a panic never seen before. Arjuna, determined to find and slay Jayadratha, pushed through the foremost car-warriors, stupefying them with his arrows and moving with great speed with Krishna as his charioteer.
Arjuna eventually reached Jayadratha, piercing him with sixty-four arrows. The other Kuru warriors, seeing this, lost hope for Jayadratha's life and stepped back. Arjuna then turned his bow on others, striking the son of Drona with fifty arrows, Vrishasena with three, Kripa with nine, Salya with sixteen, and Karna with thirty-two. He then pierced the ruler of the Sindhus with sixty-four arrows. Enraged like an elephant pierced with the hook, the ruler of the Sindhus shot arrows resembling poisonous snakes towards Arjuna's car. He managed to strike Krishna with three shafts and Arjuna with six, while also hitting Arjuna's horses and his standard. Arjuna responded by cutting off the head of Jayadratha's driver and destroying his standard.
As the sun began to set, Krishna told Arjuna that Jayadratha was hiding behind six heroic car-warriors. He explained that unless these protectors were defeated, Arjuna could not reach him. Krishna said he would use his yogic powers to shroud the sun, and when Arjuna replied, 'Let it be so,' Krishna created that darkness. The Kaurava warriors, including Jayadratha, were filled with joy, believing the sun had set and that Arjuna's vow to kill Jayadratha that day had failed. They all stood with heads thrown back, gazing at the sky. Krishna then once more addressed Arjuna, saying that the ruler of the Sindhus was now looking at the sun, casting off his fear. He told Arjuna it was the hour to cut off the head of the wicked wretch and fulfill his vow.
Arjuna unleashed a fresh onslaught, piercing Kripa with twenty arrows, Karna with fifty, and both Salya and Duryodhana with six each. He struck Vrishasena with eight arrows and the ruler of the Sindhus with sixty. As Arjuna rushed toward Jayadratha, the protectors of the Sindhu king were puzzled and overwhelmed. They showered Arjuna with arrows, but he responded by creating a thick net of shafts. Terrified, the warriors abandoned the ruler of the Sindhus and fled in every direction. The carnage was absolute, resembling the end of the world. The earth was drenched in blood so deep that the wheels of the chariots sank to their naves, and riderless elephants crushed their own ranks in their flight.
Arjuna continued to devastate the protectors of the Sindhu king, including Karna, Drona's son, Kripa, Salya, Vrishasena, and Duryodhana. He moved with such speed that his bow seemed to be a permanent circle and his arrows a constant stream. He cut the bows of Karna and Vrishasena and killed Salya's driver. Finally, Arjuna took up a divine arrow of fiery splendor, which had been worshipped with incense and flowers. As he fixed it on his bow, Gandiva, loud shouts echoed in the sky. Krishna then cautioned Arjuna about a prophecy concerning Jayadratha's father, Vriddhakshatra, who was still performing austere penances just outside Samantapanchaka.
Krishna explained that Vriddhakshatra had cursed anyone who caused Jayadratha's head to fall to the earth, stating that the executioner's own head would crack into a hundred pieces. He told Arjuna to use his celestial weapon to cut off Jayadratha's head and throw it through the air so it would land directly on the lap of the meditating Vriddhakshatra. Arjuna obeyed, shooting the arrow with the force of a thunderbolt. The shaft snatched Jayadratha's head away like a hawk catching a bird. Arjuna then used further shafts to propel the head through the sky, sending it far beyond the limits of Samantapanchaka to where the old king sat in prayer.
The head of Jayadratha landed on Vriddhakshatra's lap while he was in a sitting posture. Vriddhakshatra did not notice it immediately, but when he stood up after finishing his prayers, the head fell to the ground. At that moment, the head of Vriddhakshatra cracked into a hundred pieces, fulfilling the curse. Krishna then withdrew the illusion of darkness. The Kauravas realized they had been deceived by Krishna's power. The death of Jayadratha brought sorrow to Dhritarashtra's sons, but the Pandavas celebrated. Bhima let out a leonine shout to inform Yudhishthira of the victory, and the Pandava army, intoxicated with success, began a fierce battle against Drona.
Kripa and the son of Drona, enraged by Jayadratha's death, attacked Arjuna together. Arjuna felt great pain from their arrows but did not wish to kill his preceptor Kripa or Aswatthaman, the son of his other preceptor Drona. He fought them mildly, yet the sheer number of his arrows caused Kripa to swoon on his car. Kripa's driver carried him away from the fight, and Aswatthaman fled in fear. Arjuna began to lament, weeping for Kripa. He felt that striking his teacher was a sin that would lead him to hell, remembering Kripa's old command to never strike a preceptor. While Arjuna was in grief, Karna rushed toward him, but Krishna advised Arjuna to let Satyaki handle Karna for a while, since Karna still held the dart Indra had given him and was keeping it for Arjuna.
Satyaki, using a magnificent car provided by Krishna, fought a superhuman battle against Karna. The two warriors mangled each other with iron shafts, and Satyaki eventually killed Karna's driver and horses, leaving Karna carless and weakened. Satyaki chose not to kill Karna or Dhritarashtra's sons led by Duhsasana, leaving those tasks to Arjuna and Bhima as per their vows. After the encounter, Satyaki was provided with another car and continued to harass the Kuru troops. Sanjaya concludes by telling Dhritarashtra that his evil policy had led to the death of thirty-one of his sons by Bhima, and hundreds of others by Arjuna and Satyaki.
