The Night Battle: Aswatthaman Against Ghatotkacha

Mahabharata, Drona Parva 153

The story · English

Sanjaya told the king that after Bhurisravas was slain by Satyaki, Somadatta was consumed by rage. He confronted Satyaki, accusing him of abandoning the duties of a warrior to act like a robber. Somadatta asked why a wise man would strike someone who was helpless or turning away from the fight, specifically referring to how Bhurisravas had been left with his arms cut off by Partha. He swore by his sons and all he held dear that he would cut off Satyaki's head with a winged arrow before the night passed, unless Jishnu protected him. Somadatta blew his conch and let out a roar like a lion, challenging the Vrishni warrior to face the consequences of his cruelty.

Satyaki responded with equal fury, his eyes like lotus petals and teeth like a lion's. He told Somadatta that he felt no fear, whether fighting him or any other warrior. He asserted that he followed the rules of the Kshatriyas and would not be frightened by insults or empty words. Satyaki reminded him that he had already crushed Bhurisravas, Sala, and Vrishasena, and he promised to slay Somadatta and his kinsmen next. He swore by the feet of Krishna that he would destroy them in battle. After this exchange of vows, the two men, their eyes red with wrath, began to launch a barrage of arrows at one another.

Duryodhana and Sakuni moved in to support Somadatta, surrounding him with thousands of horses and cars. Other warriors also joined the fray to protect Somadatta, who then covered Satyaki in clouds of shafts. Seeing Satyaki in danger, Dhrishtadyumna rushed toward him with a great force. The sound of the two armies colliding was like the noise of oceans lashed by hurricanes. In the heat of the struggle, Somadatta and Satyaki exchanged nine arrows each. However, the wounds inflicted by Satyaki were severe. Somadatta collapsed on the terrace of his car in a swoon, and his driver quickly hurried him away from the battlefield to safety.

When Drona saw that Somadatta had lost consciousness, he rushed forward to kill the Yadu hero, Satyaki. Yudhishthira and other Pandava warriors surrounded Satyaki to protect him, sparking a massive battle between Drona and the Pandavas. Drona fought with overwhelming energy, shrouding the host in arrows. He pierced Yudhishthira, Satyaki and Dhrishtadyumna, and dealt heavy blows to Bhima, Nakula, Sahadeva, and Sikhandin. He also struck the five sons of Draupadi, Virata, Drupada, Yudhamanyu, and Uttamaujas. As Drona pushed forward toward Yudhishthira, the Pandava troops began to flee in all directions, wailing in fear at the slaughter.

Seeing his army routed, Arjuna, the son of Pritha, felt his wrath rise and proceeded toward the preceptor. Drona, radiant like a blazing fire, continued to consume the Pandava host like fire burning cotton. No one in the army could stop him, as his arrows cut off the heads of those who approached. Arjuna asked Govinda to drive him toward Drona's car, and Bhima followed close behind with his driver Visoka. Other warriors from the Panchalas, Matsyas, and other regions joined them. The collision of the two forces was so violent that it made the hair stand on end, resembling the sound of seas in a tempest.

Aswatthaman, enraged by the death of Somadatta's son, rushed against Satyaki. He was intercepted by the gigantic Rakshasa, Ghatotkacha, who arrived on a terrifying black iron car covered in bear-skins. The vehicle was thirty nalwas wide and high, equipped with machines, its rattle like a mass of clouds, and drawn by elephant-like beings. On its standard perched a shrieking vulture. Ghatotkacha looked like a mountain with terrible teeth and a blazing mouth. His appearance terrified the hostile kings, and his roar caused elephants to eject urine. The Rakshasas began raining stones, iron wheels, and axes upon the field, causing the kings, Dhritarashtra's sons and Karna to flee in pain.

Only Aswatthaman stood his ground against the Rakshasa. He dispelled Ghatotkacha's illusions, and the two exchanged fierce shafts. Ghatotkacha attempted to kill Aswatthaman by hurling a massive, gem-studded wheel with a thousand spokes, but Aswatthaman shattered it with his arrows. Then Ghatotkacha's son, Anjanaparvan, intervened. Aswatthaman fought him ruthlessly, cutting off his standard and his bow, and eventually slaying him despite the Rakshasa's attempts to shower trees upon him from the sky. When Ghatotkacha saw his son dead, he was filled with grief and red-eyed rage, vowing that Aswatthaman would not escape with his life.

Ghatotkacha and Aswatthaman engaged in a brutal duel. The Rakshasa used illusions to become a mountain that spat spears and lances, but Aswatthaman destroyed it with the Vajra weapon. When Ghatotkacha became a blue cloud raining rocks, Aswatthaman used the Vayavya weapon to clear the sky. Aswatthaman then slaughtered thousands of Rakshasa warriors, shining like the Yuga-fire. He even caught a celestial Asani weapon thrown by Ghatotkacha and hurled it back, destroying the Rakshasa's car. Despite the efforts of Bhima and Dhrishtadyumna to support Ghatotkacha, Aswatthaman remained an unstoppable force, creating a river of blood from the fallen.

Aswatthaman continued his rampage, slaying the sons of Drupada and Kuntibhoja. Finally, he drew a fierce arrow resembling the rod of Death and shot it through the chest of Ghatotkacha. The Rakshasa fell, and Dhrishtadyumna hurried to move him to another car as the Pandava force retreated. After the Pandava leaders regrouped, Somadatta returned to the fight, but he eventually fell senseless under a simultaneous strike from Bhima's Parigha and Satyaki's arrow. Bhima then slew Valhika and ten of Dhritarashtra's sons, as well as Vrikaratha and Satachandra, and the brothers of Sakuni, leaving the Kaurava ranks wavering in fear.

Yudhishthira then joined the battle, destroying the ranks of the Malavas, Trigartas, and others. Drona, urged by Duryodhana, attacked Yudhishthira with a series of celestial weapons, including the Vayavya, Varuna, and Agneya. Yudhishthira baffled each one. When Drona invoked the Brahma weapon, Yudhishthira countered it with his own. After this, Drona turned his fury toward the division of Drupada, routing the Panchalas. Arjuna and Bhima intervened with two large throngs of cars, attacking from the right and left. Then the Bharata host, overcome by sleep and darkness, began to break, and neither Drona nor Duryodhana could check their flight.
