Meaning · English
God of gods, master of yogis, whose praise and hearing make a person pure. You will surely draw this clan to its end, and then you will leave this world. Though you are able, you did not turn back the brahmins' curse. Krishna, I cannot give up your lotus feet even for half a moment. Master, take me too to your own abode.
Three titles open the plea. Devadeva means god of gods. Yogesha means master of yoga, the one who holds every power of union. Punyashravanakirtana means one whose hearing and singing of his name make the listener clean. Uddhava is naming who he is speaking to before he asks. Then he says what he sees coming. Krishna will end his own clan, the Yadavas, and then leave the world. Uddhava adds a hard observation. Krishna could have stopped the curse of the brahmins, the vipra-shapa, and did not. So Uddhava reads the coming loss as chosen, not as an accident. Then the plea itself. He cannot let go of Krishna's feet for even half a moment, and he asks to be taken to svadhama, Krishna's own abode. The reason is the one he gives: he cannot bear the separation. Krishna answers by teaching him instead of taking him. That answer is why the whole conversation exists. The verse asks Uddhava to say plainly what he wants, without pretending to calm. It shows love speaking honestly at the moment of parting, before any teaching has been given.
A small child on a railway platform holds the hem of a parent's coat as the train doors open. She does not argue about the journey. She only says, take me too. Uddhava stands in that place, holding on to the one he cannot imagine being apart from.
1. Tonight, think of one person or place you would find hardest to be parted from. 2. Write one plain sentence saying what you would ask of them if they were leaving, with no polish. 3. Read it once aloud, alone, and notice what you are really asking for. 4. Tomorrow, say a shortened version to someone you trust, or keep it as a prayer.
A woman sits beside her old teacher's bed on what the family has quietly agreed is probably his last evening. The nurse says visiting hours are over. She does not want to hear sensible advice about rest. She wants to ask him to stay, or to go with him. Uddhava does the same thing in the verse. He says the true thing first: I cannot bear this, take me along. In that moment the verse would let her stop rehearsing a calm she does not feel. She could say it, in a few words, to him or to herself, and then ask what he still wants to give her. Ordinary experience bears this out: a feeling named plainly is easier to carry than one pushed down. The verse does not promise that the parting will hurt less, that the person will stay, or that the request will be granted. It also does not replace the doctor, the nurse or the family who must decide practical things that night.
