Meaning · English
Your play, Krishna, is the highest good for people. Once the ear has drunk it like nectar, people let go of their longing for anything else. Lying down, sitting, walking, standing, bathing, playing, eating, and all the rest: how could we, your devotees, ever give you up, when you are dear to us as our own self? Dressed in the garlands, perfumes, clothes and ornaments you have already worn, eating what you have left on the plate, we, your servants, will cross your maya.
Uddhava is explaining why he cannot stay behind in a world without Krishna. He uses a few words. Vikridita is play: what Krishna does and says among people, as easy and unforced as a child's game. Piyusha is nectar, and Uddhava says the ear drinks it. Maya is the power by which the world pulls the mind away from its source. Ucchishta is leftover food, what remains on a plate after another has eaten. The first verse says Krishna's play is the highest good for people, and that anyone who has heard it loses the taste for other wants. The second moves from the ear to the whole day. Sleeping, sitting, walking, bathing, playing and eating are named, and the "and so on" covers the rest. Krishna was present in all of them, so Uddhava asks how a devotee could give up one who is as dear as his own self. The third verse answers a worry. Uddhava does not claim to be a renunciate. He wears what Krishna wore and eats what Krishna left, and he says that servants living this way will cross maya. The commentators generally read this as the plea of a householder-devotee who has no other strength to offer. It is taught here because Uddhava has just asked to go with Krishna, and he is saying that his bond is not an idea but a habit of loving attention that fills every hour.
A man has eaten mangoes from his own tree, picked ripe that morning. Afterwards the shop mangoes do not tempt him, though they are not bad. The tree's fruit has spoiled his appetite for the rest. Krishna's play is the tree, and the shop fruit is every other wanting.
1. Choose one ordinary act today, such as drinking your first tea or washing your hands before a meal. 2. Before you begin, take ten seconds to dedicate it silently to God, in your own words or with a single name. 3. Do the act slowly, once, with your attention on it. 4. In the evening, note whether that act felt different from the others. Repeat it tomorrow.
A man has just buried his mother. The next morning he stands at the sink, and her steel tumbler is in the rack. He thinks of putting it away in a cupboard. Instead he fills it and drinks his water from it. The verse speaks to this moment. It does not set love apart from daily life. It says love lives in sleeping, sitting, walking, bathing and eating, and in the cloth and the cup that the beloved used. Uddhava keeps Krishna's garland and leftovers close because they are physical and ordinary. The man's tumbler works the same way. Habit and a familiar object give the day a shape when the person is gone, and ordinary experience bears this out: grief usually eases through small repeated acts more than through resolutions. The verse does not say the loss stops hurting, and it does not claim that anyone who holds these things close will be spared grief. It says only that these things can carry a love through the hours. If grief stops a person from eating, sleeping or working for weeks, a doctor should be seen.
