Those sages who wear only the wind, the wanderers who strive upward, the calm and spotless renunciants, reach the dwelling called Brahman. But we are still here, great master of yoga, wandering the roads of action. By telling of you, we will cross the darkness that is so hard to cross, with your own devotees beside us. We remember and sing what you have done and what you have said, and your walk, your smiling glance, your play, which copies the ways of the world of men.
Uddhava sets two kinds of people side by side. The first are ascetics, the sannyasins. The word means those who have thrown everything down completely. They are calm, free of stain, and the text says they reach the dwelling called Brahman. Uddhava says this with respect, not complaint. The second kind is himself and those like him. They are still on the karmavartma, the road of action, where karma is deed and vartman is road. They are householders and workers who cannot walk away. Their way across is vartā, which means talk or tidings, from a root meaning to turn or happen. They cross tamas, the darkness that is hard to cross, by telling of Krishna and being held up by his devotees. Uddhava then says what that telling is made of. They remember and sing Krishna's deeds and his spoken words. They remember how he walked, the glance that smiled, and his play, which imitates human life. The commentators read this as Uddhava naming his own place honestly, not belittling the ascetics. The reason it is said here is his plea to go with Krishna. If Krishna leaves, what will an ordinary person on the road of action hold on to? He answers himself: the remembering and telling. He asks nothing new of the listener. He shows that a busy life already has what it needs, which is a loved name to turn the mind toward.
Picture a long night drive on a road with no lights. The driver cannot stop, but he hums a song his mother sang, and the dark stretch becomes bearable. The road is the life of action, the song is the telling of Krishna, and the hummed tune carries him through the dark.
1. Choose one thing Krishna did or said that you already know, even a single line. 2. Tonight, or on your next walk or ride, say it over to yourself slowly for five minutes. 3. Picture one detail of it: his walk, his glance, a smile. 4. Tell it aloud to one person this week, in a sentence or two. Notice whether your mind is quieter afterward.
A bus driver is on the last route of the night. His legs ache, the road is empty, and he cannot leave the wheel. He starts to go over a story about someone he loves, a small thing they once said, and tells it to himself again. The verse describes this move. First he does not pretend he is free to walk away, since his place is on the road of action. Then he gives his mind something steady to hold, a person and his words, and goes back over it. Then the long stretch of dark road is crossed with that company, not alone. Ordinary experience bears this out: a mind with something warm to return to is steadier than one left to circle its worries. The limit is plain. Remembering Krishna does not shorten the route, pay the bills, remove exhaustion, or replace sleep and rest when the body needs them. Uddhava claims only that the darkness can be crossed by telling, and the road stays as long as it was.
