Meaning · English

Shuka says: Having been petitioned in this way, O king, the Lord, Devaki's son, spoke to Uddhava, his single-minded, dear servant.

This is a narrator's line, not yet a teaching. Shuka tells King Parikshit that Krishna has heard Uddhava out and now turns to answer him. Three of its words show how Krishna sees the man in front of him. Ekantin means one whose heart has a single end, from eka, one, and anta, end or direction. Uddhava's devotion has no second aim. Priya means dear, so Krishna names the bond before saying anything else. Bhritya means servant, from bhri, to carry or support: one who carries the master's work and is held in return. Devakisuta, son of Devaki, recalls that the Lord who speaks has been born as a mother's child. Uddhava had asked to be taken along, saying he could not give up the garlands, the meals and the company. Krishna does not brush the plea aside. Shuka shows him addressing it as the plea of someone near and dear. The heading marks this as the start of the conversation between Krishna and Uddhava. What follows is Krishna's own voice, giving his answer to the request.

A friend has listened through a long, shaky plea without interrupting. Now he sets down his cup, turns his chair to face you, and says your name. Nothing has been decided yet, but you know you were heard. That is the moment Shuka describes: Krishna turning toward Uddhava before he gives his answer.

1. Today, when someone tells you something heavy, wait until they have finished speaking before you reply. 2. Before answering, say their name or turn your body toward them. Take one slow breath. 3. Begin your reply by naming one thing they said, so they know it reached you. 4. Afterwards, notice whether the talk went more gently than it usually does.

A man has just told his oldest friend, over tea in a hospital canteen, that he is frightened of being left behind when the friend moves abroad. He stops talking. The friend puts the cup down and looks at him before saying anything. Here is what that pause does. The man's shoulders drop a little, because he has been seen as the person he is and not as a problem to be fixed. The friend's first words then land on what was actually said, so the answer fits. Only after that does any advice have a chance of being taken in. Ordinary experience confirms that people take hard news better from someone who first showed they listened. Krishna's turning toward Uddhava, a dear and single-hearted friend, is that same pause. It does not promise that the answer will be what Uddhava wants, and it does not remove the coming separation or the grief in it. It only shows the order in which a good answer comes: attention first, then speech.
