Krishna says to Uddhava: Greatly fortunate one, what you have said to me is just what I myself intend to do. Brahma, Shiva and the guardians of the worlds are all asking me to come back and live in heaven. Here, the gods' work has been completed in full, the very work for which I came down at Brahma's request, in a part of myself.

Krishna opens by answering Uddhava. He calls him mahabhaga, greatly fortunate, a warm greeting that treats him as a friend and not a petitioner. He says that what Uddhava spoke of is what he himself already means to do. The departure is not something happening to him. Next he names who is asking. Brahma, Shiva and the lokapala, the guardians of the worlds, want him back in svarvasa, the dwelling in heaven. So the call comes from the gods who sent him. Then he says why the time has come. The devakarya, the work of the gods, is finished, and he says it is finished asesatah, without remainder. Nothing is left half done. He adds that he came down amsena, with a part of himself, because Brahma asked. The teaching begins here, at the point of leaving, because Uddhava has just asked to go with him. Krishna does not argue. He lays out the facts first: he has a purpose, it is complete, and he is called. Everything he says afterward to Uddhava rests on this plain account of why he is going. It asks the listener to hear a departure told without panic, as a task that reached its end.

A carpenter fits the last joint of a table, runs his hand along the top, sets down the plane and sweeps the shavings. He does not linger over the bench or invent more work. Krishna speaks in the same way about his years on earth: the job he came for is done, so he puts it down.

1. Tonight, pick one task you finished this week, however small, and say aloud, "That is done." 2. Sit for two minutes without starting anything new, and notice whether you want to add more to it. 3. If someone is leaving your life soon, a child, a guest, a colleague, tell them plainly one thing you were glad to do for them.

A mother stands in the hallway the last evening before her daughter leaves for a hostel in another city. The bags are packed by the door. She keeps finding small things to check: the charger, the pickle jar, the zip on the bag. The checking is not really about the bag. Krishna's plain account of leaving would change this moment in steps. First, he says the work is complete, and she can ask honestly what her work was: feeding, teaching, waiting up at night. Second, she can name that it was done and not leave it as a list of what she missed. Third, she can say the departure out loud, calmly, to the person leaving, as Krishna does with Uddhava. Ordinary experience confirms that a goodbye stated simply is easier to bear than one circled around with errands. The limit is clear. Calling the work complete does not remove the ache of the empty room or make the first quiet week easy. Nor does it say that every parent's work is finished at the door. It only offers a way to stand in the hallway without pretending nothing is happening.
