Meaning · English
Krishna tells Uddhava: This clan, struck by a curse, will destroy itself through quarrels among its own. On the seventh day the sea will flood this city. When I give up this world, it will lose its good fortune, and before long Kali will overwhelm it. Good friend, you must not stay here on earth once I have left. In the age of Kali, people will take their pleasure in what goes against dharma.
Krishna is telling Uddhava what is about to happen, plainly and in order. Three words carry it. Shapa is a curse, and the clan is already burning in one. Anyonya-vigraha is quarrel among themselves, so the fall comes from inside the family, not from an enemy. Adharma-ruci is a taste for adharma, a liking for what runs against right living. First, the Yadu clan will destroy itself. Next, on the seventh day, the sea will cover Dwaraka. Then Krishna turns from the city to the whole world. When he gives it up, it loses its mangala, its auspiciousness, the good fortune his presence held. Kali, the dark age, will soon press it down. Last, he speaks to Uddhava directly, calling him good friend. Uddhava must not remain on earth once Krishna is gone. People in that age will like what is wrong. This answers Uddhava's plea to go with Krishna, which is part of the surrounding story. Krishna does not say no to comfort him. He shows him that the place he wants to keep is already ending, and that staying on in it would be a loss. What the passage asks of the listener is to see that nothing here is meant to be held on to. The next verses say where to turn instead.
A lamp is carried out of a crowded hall. The walls, benches and carpets are all still there, but the room goes dim and people start to quarrel over the dark. The hall is the world, and the lamp is Krishna's presence in it.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you rely on as if it will always be there: a place, a routine or a person. 2. Sit with it for two minutes and name aloud what it has given you. 3. Notice whether you are holding it tightly, and how your hands and shoulders feel. 4. Do one small kind act for it or for the person today, and let the rest go without forcing anything.
A grandmother stands in her doorway with one cloth bag, the river already at the end of her lane. Her neighbours are arguing about who should have gone earlier. Krishna's words to Uddhava speak to this moment. They say that a place can end, that quarrels inside a family hasten the end, and that the time to leave comes before the water does. Step by step, she stops asking whether the house can be saved. She picks up the few things that matter and calls the person she loves. She does not spend her last minutes in blame. She walks out with her mind on the one she trusts, not on the walls. The text teaches this as Krishna's counsel to Uddhava. It does not promise that she will feel no grief, or that her home will be spared. It does not replace the boat, the officials or a doctor if she is ill. Ordinary experience only confirms that people leave a place more steadily when they have stopped fighting over it.
