Wander with Even Eyes

Bhagavata Purana 11.7.6

Meaning · English

Give up all clinging to your kinsmen and relatives. Let your mind enter fully into me, look on every being with the same eye, and walk the earth.

Three words carry it. Sneha is fondness, and its root sense is oil or stickiness: the affection that makes a person cling. Avesha is entering, the mind poured into something until it is absorbed there. Samadrk is even sight: sama, level, and drk, seeing. Krishna asks Uddhava to give up the sticky kind of love for family and friends, to put his whole mind into Krishna, and to see everyone from the same level, with no one placed higher or lower. Then he is to wander the earth. Uddhava has begged to come along. Krishna says no, because the clan is about to destroy itself and the city will go under the sea. He turns the loss into a way of life: the mind that has been resting on kin is to rest on him, and that mind can go anywhere. The commentators read even sight as seeing the Lord in every being. Krishna does not ask Uddhava to stop caring. He asks him to let go of the grip, so that his love no longer depends on who is near. What he asks of Uddhava is a loosened hold, a mind given to Krishna, a level gaze, and a journey.

A boat tied to the dock by many ropes feels safe but cannot sail. Each rope is one attachment. When the ropes are loosed, the same boat can reach any shore, and its love of the harbour does not have to end.

1. Tonight, pick one person you cling to most. Sit for two minutes and notice what you fear if they were away. 2. Wish them well in one plain sentence, without asking anything for yourself. 3. Tomorrow, greet one stranger, such as a cleaner or a driver, with the same warmth you give family. Notice how it feels to look at them evenly. 4. Before sleep, give one minute to Krishna's name, however you say it.

An older brother stands on a railway platform as his younger brother leaves for a job in another city. He grips the bag, repeats instructions, and cannot stop talking because the quiet after the train will be hard. Krishna's counsel would change the moment in steps. First, he sees that the gripping is fear of loss, not love. Second, he lets his hands loosen and says one true blessing. Third, he rests his mind on Krishna instead of on the empty seat. Fourth, he walks home looking evenly at the people he passes, not only at the one who left. Ordinary experience agrees that clinging tightens when we fear losing someone, and that it eases when we trust we can bear the distance. The teaching does not promise that the platform will stop hurting, that the brother will not be missed, or that grief for a real loss can be skipped. It also gives no help with a body or mind that needs a doctor.
