Meaning · English
Whatever is taken in by the mind, by speech, by the eyes, the ears and the other senses is passing, and it is made of the mind. Know it as appearance. For one whose mind is not steady, many separate things seem to stand there, and the confusion carries praise and blame. Right action, no action, wrong action: these divisions come from thinking in terms of merit and fault.
Three words carry the teaching. Maya here is appearance, the world as the mind presents it. Manomaya means made of mind: what reaches you through eyes, ears and speech is shaped by the one receiving it. Guna-dosha means merit and fault, the habit of stamping everything good or bad. Krishna first says that whatever the senses and mind grasp is perishable. He then says that a mind not yet steady sees many separate things and is confused by them. That confusion sorts life into right action, inaction and forbidden action, and each label rests on judging merit and fault. Krishna is not calling the world fake. He says it passes, and that the mind colours it. The commentators take the unsteady mind to be the one not yet gathered in the way Krishna goes on to describe. The reason for saying it here is Uddhava's plea to follow Krishna. Krishna has just told him to loosen his hold on his kin. This is the reason: what he clings to is something taken in by the mind, and it will not last. Uddhava is asked to hold what he sees and the verdicts he draws from it more lightly.
A white wall beside a stained-glass window turns red, then green, as the sun moves. The wall never changes. The colour comes from the glass and the light passing through. The senses and mind are the glass, and the good and bad we see in things are the colours.
1. Today, when someone's words annoy you, stop before replying and count ten slow breaths. 2. Ask yourself: what did I add to this? Notice the labels you attached, such as rude, unfair or wrong. 3. Say only what actually happened, in plain words, as if reporting to a stranger. 4. In the evening, recall one judgement that had faded by dusk.
A young man stands in a wedding hall while two families argue over who was seated badly. His uncle calls it an insult. His mother calls it a slight she will never forget. He feels the pull to choose a side and name a culprit. The verse would slow him in steps. First, separate what happened from what was added: a table was moved, a few words were sharp. Second, notice that the heat sits in the labels, insult and disrespect, and not in the chairs. Third, remember that the hall, the guests and the grievance will all be gone by next year. Then he can act, perhaps by quietly fixing the seating, without the verdict driving him. Ordinary experience confirms that the same remark stings on a tired evening and passes unnoticed after a good meal. The text teaches that the sting belongs to the mind that receives. The verse does not promise that he will feel nothing, that the quarrel will end, or that real wrongs need no answer. Where someone is truly harmed, that calls for care and sometimes for help from others.
