Therefore, with the whole crowd of the senses held steady and the mind held steady, look at this wide-spread world as lying within the Self, and look on that Self as being in me, the Lord of all. Joined to knowledge and to lived realization, being the very self of every embodied being, with a heart content in knowing the Self, you are not struck down by obstacles.
Three words carry the teaching. Indriya-grama is the village or crowd of the senses: eyes, ears, tongue and the rest, each pulling its own way. Yukta means yoked, joined, steady, like an ox that stands in its harness. Jnana and vijnana are knowledge and realization. The commentators take the first as knowing what the teaching says, and the second as that knowing made one's own, tasted and not only heard. The clauses run in order. Because the world Krishna has just called passing and mind-made pulls at us through the senses, he asks Uddhava to bring that crowd and the mind to stillness. From that stillness, Krishna asks him to see the whole spread-out world as held within the Self, and that Self as resting in Krishna, the overlord. Then comes what follows: Uddhava stands as the inner self of all embodied beings, content in knowing the Self, and obstacles do not break him. Why say this now? Uddhava has begged to leave with Krishna, afraid of being left behind. Krishna's answer is that nothing is left behind if the world and he are seen in the Self. Sridhara Svami reads the steadiness of mind as the condition for that seeing. The reason Krishna gives is plain: contentment found within cannot be knocked loose from outside. What he asks of Uddhava is first a held mind, then a changed way of looking.
Think of a village pond after children have thrown stones and run off. The water is clouded and the sky is broken into pieces. Left alone, the mud sinks and the whole sky lies in the pond, whole and clear. The stirred water is the unsteady senses and mind, and the sky held entire is the world seen in the Self.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes in a quiet corner with your phone in another room. 2. Let your eyes rest on one still thing, such as a lamp or a wall, and notice each pull to look, listen or fidget without following it. 3. When the pulls slow, think of one person you worry about and hold them in the same quiet, as someone held in the one Self. 4. Afterward, notice whether a small annoyance the next day lands more lightly.
A woman has just seen her son through security at the airport, and now she stands at the glass with her phone buzzing, the announcements overhead, a stranger's suitcase brushing her heel, and her chest tight. Every sense is pulling her somewhere. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she steps out of the stream, sits, and lets the noise and the screen go, which is the steadying of the senses. Then, with the mind quieter, the text's way of looking is to see her son, herself and the whole busy terminal as held in the one Self, which is also seen as resting in Krishna. In that looking, the leaving is not the end of the bond. Ordinary experience confirms the first part: a body that is not being jostled is less easily knocked about by small things. The verse does not promise that the ache of parting goes, or that she will feel nothing as the plane lifts. It says the contentment found within is what obstacles cannot strike down.
