Seeing neither fault nor merit in either course, he does not hold back from what is forbidden, and he does not do what is prescribed because he counts it a virtue. He is like a child. He is a friend to every being, at peace, settled in knowledge and in what that knowledge has shown him. He sees the whole world as made of me, and he does not fall again.

Krishna describes a person who has stopped keeping accounts. The first key word is dosha-buddhi, the habit of mind that stamps a thing as a fault. Its partner is guna-buddhi, the mind that stamps a thing as a merit. Krishna says this person has gone past both. He no longer avoids the forbidden because it looks bad to him, and he no longer does the prescribed because it looks like a gain. The child, arbhaka, is the comparison Krishna uses. A child acts without scoring himself. Two more words, jnana and vijnana, are knowledge learned and knowledge lived. This person has both, and he is shanta, quiet inside. Because he sees the world as made of Krishna, he is a friend to every being. Krishna says such a person does not fall again. Sridhara Svami reads the child's freedom as freedom from the pull of fault and merit. He does not read it as licence. The reason for the teaching sits just before it. Uddhava wants to stay with Krishna, and Krishna has said that the world of good and bad, done and undone, is a mind-made construction. The verse shows what a mind looks like once it has let go of that construction. It asks the listener to notice how much of daily action is driven by scoring.

Sunlight falls on a courtyard in the morning. It warms the tidy corner and the muddy one, the sweeper and the sleeper, and it keeps no list of who deserves it. The person Krishna describes gives goodwill in the same way, because he is no longer sorting people into fault and merit.

1. Choose one ordinary task today, such as washing a cup or answering a message, and do it with no thought of how it makes you look. 2. Once this evening, notice a moment when you held back or acted only to earn approval. Write down the moment in one line. 3. Before sleep, think of one person you usually judge. Wish them well for the length of three slow breaths.

A retired bus conductor sees a stranger struggling with two heavy bags at the station steps. He thinks nothing of whether anyone is watching or whether it will count for him. He picks up one bag and walks beside her. Compare the same moment with a mind that keeps a ledger. It first asks whether helping is expected, whether it is worth the trouble, and whether it will be noticed. By the time it has answered, the stranger has gone. The verse points at the first kind of mind, the one that acts straight from goodwill. Ordinary experience confirms that acting under constant self-judgment is tiring, and that kindness given freely tends to come easier. Krishna's teaching goes further than this. It says the freedom comes from seeing the world as made of him, and that is the text's claim, not something a daily scene can show. The verse also does not promise that such a person feels no grief. It does not make rules or conscience unnecessary for someone still learning. A child's ease is where the path ends. It is not a licence to ignore consequences along the way.
