I am sunk in 'I' and 'mine', my mind deluded, lodged in a body and its relations that your maya made. Teach me, Lord, your servant, so that I can truly practise what you have told me plainly. Of you, the seer of yourself, the Self of every self, I find no other speaker of truth, not even among the gods. Brahma and all the embodied, taking outer things as real, are bewildered in mind by your maya.

Uddhava has just heard Krishna's counsel and found he cannot follow it. Here he says why, and asks for help. Three words carry it. Aham is 'I' and mama is 'mine'. Together they name the habit of drawing a line around a body, a family and a set of possessions, and calling it oneself. Maya is Krishna's own power by which the world appears and holds attention. Uddhava says that habit was built by it, and that he is sunk deep in it, together with all its attachments. Then he asks. He calls himself bhritya, a servant, and asks to be taught so he can truly carry out what Krishna has said so plainly. He does not ask for more words. He asks for a way to live them. His reason is that he sees no other speaker of truth. Krishna sees his own Self directly and is the Self within every self. Even the gods, Brahma among them, wear bodies and look outward at things, so maya bewilders them too. The commentators take this admission as the doorway to what follows. It asks the listener to start from an honest account of where he stands, before any advice can be used.

A crowded railway junction at night. Every traveller is asking the next one which platform to take, and nobody knows. Only the station master, who laid out the tracks, can answer. The crowd is Uddhava and the gods, all turned outward and confused. The station master is Krishna.

1. Today, listen for the words 'I' and 'mine' as you speak: my seat, my time, my opinion. Count them for ten minutes at some ordinary moment. 2. Pick one place where you cling hardest, and tell yourself plainly, 'I do not see this clearly.' 3. Name one person whose guidance you trust on it, and ask them one honest question this week.

Two brothers stand in their late father's house on the afternoon of the division, each holding a different clock and sure it was promised to him. Voices rise. Each speaks from 'my share', 'my right', 'my father's favourite'. The verse offers another first move. Before arguing, say what Uddhava says: I am caught in 'mine', and I cannot see past it alone. Said aloud, even only to oneself, this loosens the grip a little. It also makes room for a third person, an elder or a trusted relative, whose view neither brother owns. Ordinary experience confirms that people begin to learn the moment they admit they do not know. The verse does not settle who gets the clock, and it does not take away the grief of losing the father. Krishna's reply, in the text, comes after the asking and does not come as a promise that the asking solves anything. The old teaching calls the pull of 'mine' maya. It is the text's own teaching, and it is stated here in the text's own terms.
