Taking Refuge When Weary
Bhagavata Purana 11.7.18
Meaning · English
Therefore I, worn out in mind and burning with sorrow, take refuge in you, Narayana, friend of Nara: faultless, boundless beyond measure, all-knowing, the Lord whose dwelling is free of every hindrance.
Three words carry the verse. Nirvinna means worn out, a mind that has had enough of the world's chasing; it comes from nir, out, and vid, to find, as if nothing is left to find there. Vrijina is the trouble that scorches, and Uddhava says he is abhitapta, heated through by it. Sharana is refuge, the shelter you run to when you cannot manage alone. 'Therefore' points back to what Uddhava has just said: he is stuck in 'I' and 'mine', and he sees no other teacher. So he names who Krishna is. Krishna is faultless, with no flaw. He is without a far shore, so no one reaches his end. He knows everything and rules everything, and his abode is not blocked by anything. Last come two names: Narayana, and Nara's friend, a reminder that the Lord befriends a human being. The question behind it is what a person does after hearing that renunciation is hard and that no one else can teach him. Uddhava answers by stopping his own struggle and handing himself over. Sridhara Svami reads the long list of praises as the reasons Uddhava can trust, not as flattery. What the verse asks of a listener is honesty: to say where one is tired and burning, and to name where one is going for shelter.
A man has walked all afternoon in white heat, sandals worn thin, water gone. At the roadside he sees a deep-roofed rest house, a well in its yard, and a keeper who knows every road. He does not bargain. He walks in. The heat is the burning of sorrow, and the keeper is the one Uddhava names.
1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and name, in one plain sentence, what has worn you out lately. Say it aloud or write it down. 2. Name one trouble you have been carrying alone and stop trying to solve it for those two minutes. 3. Say a single line of surrender to whoever you hold as your refuge. Use your own words: 'I am tired, I come to you.' 4. Notice whether your shoulders or breath change. Do nothing more.
A woman closes the shutter of her small bakery after another month of unpaid bills. She has tried every fix herself: cheaper flour, longer hours, a loan from a cousin. Standing in the dark shop, she is too tired to think of one more plan. Uddhava's verse speaks to that moment. First it asks her to say what is true: she is worn out and scorched. Then it points her to turn toward Narayana, who is faultless and whose knowledge has no gap, and to say 'I take refuge in you' instead of 'I must fix this tonight'. The next morning the bills will still be there. Ordinary experience does confirm that exhaustion makes it easier to admit need, and that naming the strain plainly is often the first relief. The verse does not promise that the debt, the grief or an illness will vanish. If her sleeplessness or low mood persists for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see as well.
