Meaning · English
Most people in the world who see clearly how the world works lift themselves, by their own effort, out of a harmful leaning of the mind. For a human being especially, the self is the teacher of the self. By what is seen directly and by what is reasoned from it, one finds what is truly good.
Krishna tells Uddhava three things. First, people who understand how the world works usually rescue themselves from a bad habit of mind. The key word is ashubhashaya. Ashubha is inauspicious, and ashaya is what lies in the mind, from shi, to lie down. It means the leanings that sit in the mind like sediment and pull a person toward harm. Second, the self is the guru of the self. Guru means the heavy one, the one with weight, a teacher. Krishna says that for a human being, in particular, the weight of teaching can rest within. The commentators take this inner self as one's own discerning intelligence. Third, he says how this teacher learns: by pratyaksha, what is placed before the eyes, and anumana, a measuring afterward, which is inference. One sees what happens, then reasons about where it leads. Why teach this now? Uddhava has just begged to go with Krishna, who is leaving. Krishna's answer is that Uddhava is not left without a teacher. Uddhava will carry one inside himself. What this asks of the listener is to treat their own watching and thinking as serious work. Looking at what actually happens, and reasoning from it, is how one finds what is good.
A man checks his face in the mirror before leaving the house. The mirror only shows what is there. His own hand straightens the collar and wipes the smudge. Direct seeing and reasoning are the mirror. The self is the one who looks and then fixes.
1. Tonight, before sleep, spend three minutes with one habit you repeated today that left you worse off, such as snapping at someone or scrolling past midnight. 2. Write down what you saw: what happened just before, and what followed after. 3. Ask yourself in one sentence where that habit leads if repeated for a year. 4. Choose one small change for tomorrow, and note tomorrow evening whether it held.
A father sits on the stairs after shouting at his son over homework. The boy is crying behind a closed door. The father has not been taught anything new in the last minute. He has only seen what he did. The verse starts there. He recalls that this happened last week too, and the week before. He sees that it begins when he is hungry and tired and the work is not done. From this he reasons that tomorrow he should eat first and sit down beside the boy before the frustration builds. That is seeing and inferring, with himself as the teacher. Ordinary experience confirms that a person can often learn more from honest looking at their own days than from advice given once. The verse does not promise that the habit will break at once, or that the boy's tears are undone. It does not replace a doctor or counsellor where a habit is tied to illness, addiction or deep distress, and asking for help is also a way of seeing clearly.
