Bowing Before Remembering

Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotram 1

Meaning · English

Bowing the head to the god Vinayaka, Gauri's son, in whom devotees make their home, let one remember him daily for long life, wishes and wealth fulfilled.

The hymn opens with a gesture before any praise: the head goes down. The one bowed to is Gauri's son, the goddess's child, known as Vinayaka, the one who leads. He is called the dwelling of his devotees, the place they belong. Then comes the instruction: remember him every day, not once. The hymn also states its own purpose openly. It names three things this daily remembering is for: a long life, wishes coming true, and wealth. The aim is said plainly in the first line.

Picture stepping into an old house with a low doorframe. Everyone who visits lowers their head at the threshold, without thinking, and then they are inside, among family. The bow in the hymn works the same way: the head goes down first, and what lies beyond is a god described as a home where his devotees already live.
