Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotram 2

Meaning · English

First, the One with the Curved Trunk; second, the One-Tusked; third, the One with Dark Tawny Eyes; fourth, the Elephant-Faced.

The hymn starts counting. Each number comes with a name, and each name describes how Ganesha looks. First is his trunk, bent in a curve. Second is his single tusk. Third is his eyes, dark with a reddish-brown tint. Fourth gathers the whole head: his face is an elephant's. Nothing is asked for yet. These four lines set his features in order, so the son of Gauri bowed to at the opening now has a face to picture.

Picture a parent holding an old photo for a small child and pointing: this is Grandma's nose, these are her eyes, that's her smile. Each touch of the finger adds one feature until the face is known. The four names work the same way, each one fixing a single part of Ganesha's face in the mind of whoever recites them.
