Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotram 3
Meaning · English
Fifth, the one with the great belly; sixth, the one of startling form; seventh, the king of obstacles; and eighth, the one coloured like smoke.
The count picks up where the last line stopped. The fifth name describes a large, round belly. The sixth calls him odd or formidable in shape, someone whose looks are unusual and a little startling. The seventh makes him king of obstacles: hindrances answer to him, which is why a hymn about ending troubles calls on him. The eighth gives his colour as smoke, a dusky grey. Each name is a short picture of him, and the numbers keep the pictures in order.
Picture someone counting on their fingers, thumb pressing each joint in turn: fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth. The thumb never skips a joint and never goes back. The words fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth do the same job here. They let a person reciting keep their place among twelve names without losing count or doubling one.
