Moon-Browed to Elephant-Faced

Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotram 4

Meaning · English

Ninth, the one who wears the moon on his forehead; tenth, the Leader; eleventh, the Lord of the Hosts; and twelfth, the Elephant-Faced One.

The list of twelve finishes here. Ninth is the one with the moon on his forehead, a thin crescent of light worn where a mark would sit. Tenth is the Leader, the one with no one standing above him. Eleventh is the Lord of the Hosts, master of the bands of attendants who follow him. Twelfth is the Elephant-Faced. Each title holds up one thing to keep in mind: something he wears, his rank, his following, and finally the face everyone already knows.

Picture setting a table for twelve. Plate by plate you go around, and when the twelfth plate goes down the table is full. Nothing is missing and nothing is extra. These four names are the last places being set. Each name is its own seat, and only with all twelve filled is the list complete and ready to be read as one.
