Eight Copies, Given Away

Sankatanashana Ganesha Stotram 8

Meaning · English

Whoever writes this hymn out and offers it to eight brahmins gains every kind of knowledge, through the grace of Ganesha.

The act is simple and physical. A person writes the hymn out by hand and gives the written copies to eight brahmins, the priests and scholars who keep sacred texts. The fruit named is learning, and not a piece of it: all of it, every kind of knowledge. The last phrase says where that comes from. It arrives through Ganesha's favor, his gracious gift, rather than as something the copying produces by itself.

Picture someone copying a family recipe onto cards in careful handwriting, one card for each relative who asked. The writing is slow, letter by letter, and then the cards leave the house. The hymn is handled the same way: written out with care, then handed on, so it lives in eight places instead of one.
