Meaning · English

You know the fire that leads to heaven, Death. Teach it to me, for I come to you with trust. Those who reach the heaven-world share in deathlessness. This I choose as my second gift.

Three words carry the request. Agni means fire, here the sacred altar fire of the ritual. Svargya means leading to svarga, the heaven-world; the fire is the means, heaven the goal. Shraddha, in the word for one who has it, is trust: a settled confidence that the teacher will not mislead. Nachiketas says Yama knows this fire, asks to be taught it, and offers trust as his qualification. He gives his reason in the same breath. Those who live in that world share in amritatva, deathlessness, literally the state of not dying. The reason is pointed, because he is speaking to Death itself. He has just seen a world without fear, and he asks the one who rules mortality how to reach the place beyond it. He is not asking for pleasure, only for the way. This is the second of his three boons. The first has already been granted. Shankara reads the heaven in the verse as a lasting abode that rituals can reach, and says that Nachiketas' deeper wish for freedom is taken up later in the text. He also reads shraddha as faith in the teacher and the scriptures together.

A traveler who has heard of a village high in the hills does not ask for a description of the view. He finds the one man who has walked the path and asks for the route, promising to follow it closely. The fire is the route, the heaven-world is the village, and trust is the promise to walk it as told.

1. Choose one thing you want to learn from a particular person this week, such as a recipe, a repair or a prayer. 2. Ask them directly, and say why you are asking. 3. While they explain, do not interrupt for ten minutes. Notice where you want to argue and let it pass. 4. That evening, do what they showed you, step by step, before changing anything.

A young man stands in a hospital corridor after his grandfather's funeral. His grandmother is asleep on the bench beside him. A cousin says the old ones are fine now. He does not want comfort. He wants to know how it is done, whatever it is that they say is waiting. He goes and finds the elderly neighbour who has sat with many families, and he asks plainly, saying he will listen. The verse changes that moment in steps. First, the question is put to someone who might know, instead of staying a private ache. Second, he says what he brings, which is attention and trust, and not a demand for proof. Third, he asks for a method, not a conclusion, so there is something to do with his hands. The text gives Nachiketas' hope as its own teaching: that heaven brings deathlessness. It does not say the neighbour will answer fully, nor that grief will lift. It does not replace a doctor or counsellor if the sadness stays heavy for weeks. Ordinary experience does confirm that a question asked openly and received kindly often eases a person before any answer comes.
