Meaning · English
Mahas is Brahman, enlarging all the Vedas. Bhur, Bhuvah, Suvah are breaths; Mahas is food, enlarging all breath. Who knows these sixteen knows Brahman; the gods bring him offerings.
Mahas, the fourth utterance, is set beside Brahman, the sacred power behind the chants. Through it the Vedas grow large. Then the same pattern moves into the body. Bhur is the breath drawn in, Bhuvah the breath sent out, Suvah the breath that spreads through the limbs. Mahas is food, because breath keeps going only while the body is fed. Four utterances, each read four ways, make sixteen. Knowing them all is knowing Brahman, and the gods bring that person their offerings.
Think of an oil lamp. The wick draws up, the flame leaps, the glow spreads across the room. Three movements, easy to see. Pour out the oil and all three stop together. Bhur, Bhuvah and Suvah are the three breaths, like those movements. Mahas, food, is the oil underneath, the one thing each of them runs on.
