Everything Comes in Fives

Meaning · English
Earth, mid-air, sky, directions; fire, wind, sun, moon, stars; breaths, senses, the body's layers. A seer said: all this is fivefold, and fivefold fills out fivefold.
The teacher sorts the outer world into three sets of five. There are places: earth, mid-air, sky, the main directions and the in-between ones. There are lights and powers: fire, wind, sun, moon, stars. There is what fills and grows: water, plants, trees, open space, the body. He then sorts a person the same way: five breaths, five faculties (sight, hearing, mind, speech, touch), and five tissues, from skin to marrow. The point is the match. The person's fives line up with the world's fives, so what is within can complete what is without.
A five-pin lock opens only to a key cut with five notches in the right places. Each notch meets its pin, and the bolt turns. The world is laid out in sets of five, and so is a person: breaths, senses, tissues. Because the two patterns match, a person can meet the world and fill it out.
