Let a person fill two of the stomach's four parts with food, and one with drink. The fourth part should be left over, kept empty as a dwelling for the wind and the others.
Picture the stomach in four equal shares. Solid food takes two. Drink takes one: water, buttermilk, a thin soup. The last share is kept empty on purpose. It is not wasted space. It is room for vata and the others. Ayurveda names three doshas, the forces that run the body. Vata moves things, pitta cooks and transforms them, and kapha binds and holds them together. Charaka teaches the same idea with three parts: one for food, one for liquid, and one for the free movement of these three. In Ayurveda's wider teaching, digestion is work these forces do together with agni, the digestive fire, and work needs room. By that wider teaching, a stomach packed to the top leaves them no space to stir and turn the meal, so it sits heavy and half-cooked. The quarters are not a cup to measure with. They describe a feeling to learn: satisfied but still light, able to rise from the meal and walk. Vagbhata's meal ends there, not at the last bite the plate allows.
1. At your next main meal, serve yourself a little less than usual, and eat it sitting down. 2. Halfway through, put your spoon down for a few breaths and notice how full you feel. 3. Take your drink in small sips during the meal rather than one large glass at the end. 4. Stop at the first sense of being satisfied but light, the point where a short walk would feel easy, and get up. If you are ill, pregnant, elderly, recovering, or have been told to eat more, follow your doctor on how much.
Much of this sits comfortably with ordinary medical advice. Fullness signals from the stomach and gut reach the brain with a delay, so people who eat until stuffed have usually eaten past what they needed. Stopping at comfortable satisfaction is common advice for both comfort and weight. Very large meals are a familiar cause of heartburn, bloating and the heavy drowsiness after lunch. Drinking moderately with a meal is generally considered harmless, and sipping can slow the pace of eating. The exact fractions, though, have no measured basis. The stomach stretches a great deal and has no fixed compartments. The idea that the doshas need room to move has no direct modern match. The quarters work best as a picture of moderation, not anatomy, and children, frail older people and anyone underweight may need more food, not less.
