Absorption Without an Object
Yoga Sutras 1.18
Meaning · English
The other kind of absorption comes after the practice of stopping the mind's activity has been done again and again. Nothing is held in view then. Only the residue of earlier impressions remains.
Three words carry this sutra. Virama means a stopping, a ceasing. Pratyaya means the content in the mind, the idea or object it is resting on. Samskara means an impression, a trace left behind by earlier experience. Sesha means what is left over. Patanjali says there is another kind of absorption, different from the one with an object described just before. Here the practice is to cease: to let the very idea of an object stop. Abhyasa, repeated practice, comes first and leads up to this. What remains is only the samskaras, the leftover traces, with no object lit up in the mind. Why say it? The previous sutra listed stages of absorption that all lean on an object. A student could think that is the whole of it. Patanjali shows that practice can go past the object, and he rests this on his earlier teaching that practice and letting go quiet the mind's turnings. Vyasa, in the Bhashya, takes this as the absorption in which the mind has stopped all content and holds only its latent impressions, which is why he calls it seedless in a sense. Later readers differ on how fully the mind has stopped here, and the commentators do not all draw the line in the same place.
A ceiling fan is switched off. The blades still turn for a while, slower and slower, with no push behind them. Then they stop. The practice of ceasing is the switch. The leftover traces are the last slow turning, which remains after the active content has gone.
1. Once today, sit for five minutes in a quiet spot and rest your attention on one plain thing, such as a candle or your breath. 2. When a thought arrives, do not follow it or push it. Notice that it came and let it fade. 3. At the end, spend a minute noticing the gaps between thoughts, however brief. 4. Repeat the same short sitting tomorrow. The sutra puts repetition first.
