Rest Without a Body

Yoga Sutras 1.19

Meaning · English

For those who have set the body aside and dissolved into nature, the state of absorption arises from the way they exist, not from practice.

Three terms carry it. Bhava means a coming to be, a state of existing. Pratyaya means the ground a state rests on, its cause. So bhava-pratyaya is absorption that rests on a manner of being, not on effort. Videha is vi-deha, without a body. Prakriti-laya joins prakriti, nature as the root stuff of things, with laya, a dissolving or melting into. Taken whole, Patanjali says one kind of absorption belongs to beings who are bodiless or merged into nature. It comes to them from their condition. They did not build it by method. The sutras before it describe absorption reached by stages and by the will's work. This one names a look-alike that arrives without that work, so a student does not take it for the finished road. It leads into the sutra that follows, which gives the path for everyone else. Vyasa's Bhashya reads the videha as gods whose minds rest only on impressions, with no body, and the prakritilaya as those whose minds have merged into nature. He holds that each stays in that state for a time. The commentators add that because it was not won by practice, it does not last.

A stone dropped in a pond lies still on the bottom. It did not hold itself still, because the water simply put it there. Absorption that rests on a manner of being is like that stillness. It belongs to where the stone landed, not to anything the stone did.

1. Today, notice one stillness you did not make: the quiet while a kettle heats, or the moment before sleep. Note that it came from circumstance. 2. Later, sit for five minutes and rest your attention on one thing, such as your breath or a candle flame. Notice the small effort of returning when it drifts. 3. Compare the two in the evening. Ask only which one you could repeat tomorrow by choice.
