Meaning · English
For all the others, absorption is reached by way of trust, vigor, steady remembering, concentration, and clear insight.
Patanjali names five things, one after another. Shraddha is trust, from the sense of setting the heart on something. Virya is vigor, the strength of a hero, from vira. Smriti is memory, the keeping in mind of what one has set out to do. Samadhi is absorption, a putting-together of the scattered mind into one. Prajna is insight, a knowing that sees clearly. The word itaresham means 'of the others.' These are the people who were not born into absorption as described in 1.19. For them it is reached by a path, and the sutra says each of the five comes before the next. Trust gives the strength to keep going. Strength makes steady remembering possible. Remembering allows the mind to gather itself, and a gathered mind sees clearly. Patanjali says this because the earlier sutras describe absorption that comes by nature, and most readers are not in that case. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, describes shraddha as a calm clearness of mind toward yoga, and says it protects the practitioner as a mother protects her child. From it the other four follow. The commentators agree on the order and differ little on the terms.
A staircase climbed in dim light, where each step can only be found by standing on the one below. Trust is the first step, insight the last, and nobody reaches the top landing by skipping to it. The five qualities are that stair, each one holding up the next.
1. Tonight, pick one small practice you already half-trust, such as sitting quietly for five minutes. 2. Do it at the same hour for a week, including on days you would rather skip. 3. Before you begin, say in one sentence why you are doing it. 4. During it, keep attention on one plain thing, such as the breath at the nostrils. When it drifts, bring it back. 5. Afterward, notice one fact about your own mind that you had not seen before.
