Intensity Brings It Near
Yoga Sutras 1.21
Meaning · English
For those whose drive is sharp and forceful, absorption stands close at hand.
Two words carry this sutra. Tivra means sharp, keen, strong. Samvega is a rushing forward, an impetus, the push behind an effort. Together they name a drive that is felt and not merely intended. Asanna means sitting near, close by. The plain sense is short. For people whose drive is intense, the state of absorption is near. Patanjali says nothing here about the others. He only says where intensity puts a person. Why say it? The sutras just before it describe two kinds of absorption and the means for the second kind: faith, vigour, mindfulness, one-pointedness, discernment. A student then asks how long it takes. Patanjali answers that the distance depends on how strongly the practice is driven. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads it this way: for those whose drive is intense, absorption and its fruit come near. The commentators who follow him treat the next sutra as the explanation, since it sorts that drive into grades.
Two pots of the same water sit on a stove. One has a low flame under it, the other a high flame. The high-flame pot reaches the boil first. The water and the pot are alike, and only the heat under them differs. In the sutra, the heat is the strength of the drive.
1. Pick one practice you already keep, such as sitting quietly, a prayer, or a walk without your phone. Note today how strongly you want to do it, from faint to keen. 2. Do it once this week at the hour when your wish for it is strongest, for ten minutes. 3. Afterwards, write one line on what that wish felt like in the body and mind. Notice what raised it and what lowered it.
