Degrees Within Degrees

Yoga Sutras 1.22

Meaning · English

Even among the keen there is a further difference, because the practice itself may be gentle, moderate, or extreme in degree.

Three words carry it. Mridu means soft or mild. Madhya means middle. Adhimatra means beyond the measure, extreme. The last two words, tato 'pi, say "even from that" or "even among these," and viseshah means a distinction. So the sutra says: even among those already called keen, there is a further difference, because the effort can be mild, middling, or extreme. Patanjali has just said that absorption is nearest to the keen. A student could take that to mean the keen are all alike and arrive together. He corrects this. Keenness comes in degrees, and the nearness follows the degree. Vyasa's Bhashya reads it this way: the means are of three strengths, and the keenness within each is also of three strengths, which gives nine kinds of practitioner. The commentators agree that the sutra is about differing speed of arrival. Later readers mostly follow Vyasa's grading, so the sutra gives a scale rather than a verdict on anyone.

Three pots stand on three burners, one flame low, one medium, one high. All three are heated, and all will boil, but at different times. Practice is the flame, nearness is the boiling, and the height of the flame sets how soon it comes.

1. Tonight, pick one practice you already do, such as sitting quietly, a prayer, or a short walk without your phone. 2. Decide whether you did it gently, moderately, or fully today. Note the answer without judging it. 3. Do it again tomorrow at the same hour for ten minutes. Watch whether the degree changes from one day to the next.
