Meaning · English
One rich in learning and in what he has heard, steady in himself and not a mere reasoner, sees this world as only maya and lays even his knowledge down in me. For the knower I alone am the dear one, the aim, the means, the thing accepted. Heaven and freedom are both me. Apart from me nothing else is dear to him.
Three words carry the teaching. Maya is the world as a made appearance: it shows itself, changes and passes, and does not stand on its own. The text does not call it nothing. Jnana is knowledge, here the settled seeing that comes from study and hearing and is then lived. Sannyasa, from the root for laying down, means setting something aside. Krishna tells Uddhava about the person who has learned deeply, is steady in himself, and does not simply argue his way to conclusions. Such a person sees the world as maya. Then comes the surprising step: he sets down his knowledge too, placing it in Krishna instead of holding it as his own possession. Next Krishna says what the knower finds in him. Krishna is what he loves, what he is aiming at, the means of getting there, and what he accepts along the way. Heaven and freedom, the two things people usually want, are also Krishna. Nothing else is dear to him apart from Krishna. This is taught here because Uddhava is about to lose Krishna's company, and Krishna is showing where the wise place their love: not in the world and not in their own cleverness. The commentators read the offering of knowledge as the point where knowledge turns into devotion. It asks of the listener that learning not end in pride.
A man carries a heavy sack of grain home through the rain, proud of how much he has gathered. At his door he sets it down, and his hands are free to hold his child. Knowledge is the grain, carried well but meant to be laid down. What waits at the door, and is loved, is Krishna.
1. Tonight, pick one thing you know well, a skill, a fact or an opinion you are proud of. 2. Sit for two minutes and say quietly, in your own words, that it was given to you and does not belong to you alone. 3. Tomorrow, when you are tempted to show that you know better, stay silent once and notice what you feel. 4. Before sleep, name one thing you love that you cannot earn or argue for.
A retired schoolteacher stands at his farewell function, a shawl around his shoulders, while colleagues praise his learning for forty years. He feels pleased, then a small worry that without the praise he is nobody. The verse works on that moment in steps. First it asks him to see the praise, the shawl and even the title of learned man as passing things. Then it asks him to see what he knows as received, from teachers, books and years, not made by him alone. Then it turns his attention to what he loves most, which the text says is Krishna. Ordinary experience agrees that pride in being right is heavy to carry and makes a person guarded, while gratitude loosens the grip. The limit is plain: the verse does not take away the sting of retirement, the fear of being forgotten, or the grief of an empty classroom. It names a place to rest the love that remains, nothing more.
