The verse and its meaning · Shiva Sutras · Mind Is Mantra
The mind itself as mantra
Shiva Sutras 2.1
Meaning · English
The mind is mantra. The mind itself, nothing added, is mantra.
Two words, and each opens. Citta is the mind: the part that notices, remembers, wants and thinks. It comes from a root meaning to perceive. Mantra comes from a root meaning to think and to guard. A mantra is what holds the thought and keeps it safe. Usually a mantra is a sound handed over by a teacher. Vasugupta says the mind itself is that sound. Nothing has to be brought in from outside. The sutra has no verb, so it simply sets the two words side by side: mind, mantra. Shiva teaches it here because the second section of the Shiva Sutras turns to the Shakta way, the way of the mind's own power of awareness, where the mind is the tool rather than something to be set aside. The first section's way, the Shambhava, needs no tool at all. The Shakta way begins by taking the mind as it stands. Kshemaraja's Vimarshini takes the sutra to mean that the mind, when it rests in awareness of the Self, is itself the mantra that protects. Bhaskara's Varttika adds one emphasis: the mind is mantra through its oneness with the deity the worshipper turns toward, and this guarding is what frees from the round of birth and death.
1. Sit where you will not be disturbed, and let the body settle. 2. Do not choose a word. Turn toward the mind itself and watch it working. 3. Treat each thought, as it rises, as the mantra being spoken. Do not push it away or follow it. 4. When the mind runs off after a story, notice that the running is the mind too. Come back to watching. 5. Stop when the time you set is over.
