The verse and its meaning · Shiva Sutras · Mind Is Mantra
Effort as the practitioner
Shiva Sutras 2.2
Meaning · English
The inner effort is itself the one who practises.
Two words. Prayatna is effort: pra, forward, and yatna, striving. It is the inward push by which attention turns toward something and holds it. Sadhaka is the practitioner, from the root sadh, to accomplish, to reach a goal. The sutra sets them side by side: effort is the practitioner. No second person stands behind the effort, deciding to make it. The one who practises is the striving as it happens. Having said in 2.1 that the mind is mantra, Shiva now says what works with it. It is not a separate doer. It is the mind's own inward stir toward its object. This is why the sutra sits in the shakta way, the path of Shakti, the power of Shiva to know and act. In that way the means is a movement of the mind itself, not a vast opening, as in the shambhava way, and not a worked-out technique, as in the anava way. Kshemaraja, in the Vimarshini, takes the effort to be the inner exertion by which the mantra is held, and says that this exertion is the practitioner. Bhaskara's Varttika adds that the effort rests on the mantra and joins the one who repeats it with the deity of the mantra.
1. Sit or stand wherever you are and choose one small thing to hold in attention, such as a single word said silently. 2. Notice the slight inward push by which you keep attending. Make that push the object. 3. When the mind wanders, notice the moment you return. That return is the effort. Let it be light. 4. Do not look for a practitioner behind the effort. Stay with the effort itself. 5. Stop when the push turns into strain, or after five minutes.
