The verse and its meaning · Shiva Sutras · Mind Is Mantra

Knowing as the body

Shiva Sutras 2.3

विद्याशरीरसत्ता मन्त्ररहस्यम्

Meaning · English

The presence of a body made of knowing is the secret of mantra.

Take the words one at a time. Vidya is knowing, from the root vid, to know. Sharira is body, the form something takes. Satta is being or presence, from the root as, to be. Rahasya is secret, what stays hidden even when it is in plain view. Put together, the sutra says that a mantra has a body, and that body is made of knowing, not of syllables. Its presence is that knowing. This is the secret of mantra. The sound is only what shows on the surface. Shiva teaches it as a Shakta teaching, one that works through knowing and not through a method of force. It rests on the two sutras before it. If the mind is mantra, and effort is the one who practises, then the question is what a mantra really is. The answer is that it is a living knowing. Bhaskara's Varttika reads the body as the whole mass of letters, which it calls the Lord as sound. It reads the presence as the full sense of I that runs through every path. That, it says, is the hidden meaning in mantras, which guard whoever reflects on them. On the finer points, the commentators are not all in step.

1. Sit where you will not be disturbed, and let the body settle. 2. Let a word or phrase you know well rise in the mind, and hear it inwardly. 3. Notice that something knows the word as it sounds. Attend to that knowing, not to the sound. 4. When the mind wanders, you notice that you have wandered. That noticing is the same knowing. Rest in it, then return. 5. Stop when the time you set has passed.
