Proof Under Pressure
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 35.22
Meaning · English
Gold is proved in fire, a person of good birth in how he carries himself, an honest man in how he acts.
Vidura gives three tests with one idea behind them: a claim is settled by what shows up when it is put under strain. Three words carry it. Kulina means well-born, from kula, a household or lineage with a name to live up to. Vritta, from the root vrit, to turn, is how a person turns in action, his conduct. Vyavahara is dealings, what passes between one person and another. Now the clauses. Gold looks the same, pure or mixed, until heat comes. Fire burns off the false and leaves the real. A claim of good birth is only a claim until it is seen in manners and behavior. A claim of honesty is only words until it is seen in actual dealings. Vidura says this to a king who cannot sleep and has asked him for counsel. Rank, family and reputation, he tells Dhritarashtra, do not decide a man's worth. Conduct does, and it is what everyone around him can read. For the man who flares up at nothing and glows at nothing, that is pointed. Others cannot see his intentions. They see only the swings, and the swings are the evidence.
A new ladder leans against the wall looking solid, and the paint is bright. Nobody learns anything from looking. Put a foot on the first rung, then your weight, and it either holds or creaks. A person's temper under small strain is that first rung. It shows what the name and the good intentions cannot.
1. Tonight, before sleep, recall two moments from today when you flared up or lit up suddenly. 2. For each, ask what actually happened outside you. Was there a cause, or was it a mood you carried in? 3. Tomorrow, when you feel a sudden rush of anger or delight, wait three slow breaths before you speak. 4. Notice what someone watching you would have seen, since that is all they have to judge by.
