One Year, Four Vows
Hatha Yoga Pradipika 1.57
Meaning · English
Chaste, measured in eating, a renouncer, wholly given to yoga: such a person becomes accomplished after a year. About this there is no cause for doubt.
The verse names four qualities and one result. Brahmacari is the first. The word is usually read as a life of sexual restraint, and the Pradipika gives no further detail here. Mitahari means a measured eater: mita is 'measured' and ahara is 'food'. Tyagi is one who gives up or lets go. The verse does not say what is given up, so the word stays open. Yogaparayana means having yoga as one's final refuge, the thing everything else leans on. Together the four describe a life arranged around the practice, not a practice added to an ordinary life. The promised result is that the person becomes a siddha, an accomplished one, after a year. The Sanskrit says 'beyond a year', which means once a year has passed. The last line closes the matter: no deliberation is needed. This is the text asserting its claim, and it gives no argument for the claim. The Pradipika teaches it here because the verses before have laid out a whole course of practice, and this verse names the conditions it expects around that course. It asks for steadiness. The four qualities must hold together, and they must hold for a full year, not for a burst of enthusiasm. The next verse takes up only one of the four, eating, and defines it.
A retired schoolteacher decides to practise every morning for a year. She finds that the hard part is not the postures. It is the rest of the day: late dinners, skipped sleep, a calendar that keeps swallowing the hour. The old verse is aimed at exactly that. It says a practice needs a life that can hold it. That much agrees with ordinary experience. Skills built over many months of regular effort usually come from steady habits, and eating at sensible times and in sensible amounts supports energy and attention. A doctor would say the same. Reading the verse literally can also do harm: eating too little, or renouncing so much that health and relationships suffer, is no help to anyone. The claims do not carry over as easily. Nothing in current knowledge supports a fixed one-year timetable, and 'siddha' has no measurable meaning. Celibacy as a requirement belongs to the manual's world of renunciant practitioners. Most readers today live as householders, and they will weigh that part for themselves. What carries over is the principle of arranging daily life around what one has chosen to practise. The sixteenth-century hut does not.
