From Seat to Breath

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 1.55

Meaning · English

Thus, through the postures and their holds, the chief among yogis, free of weariness, goes on to practise cleansing of the channels, the mudras and the other workings of the breath.

The verse is a hinge. It closes the teaching on postures and points to what comes next. "Thus" looks back over the asanas just described. Asana is a seat or posture. The verse speaks of asana-bandhas, and bandha means a binding or a lock. It can be read as the postures held firmly in place, or as postures together with the holds the text teaches. Either way, the body has first been made steady. "Free of weariness" is the condition the verse sets. The practitioner is meant to come to the next stage without strain. The "chief among yogis" is the one who has done this work and is not tired by it. Three things follow. Nadi-shuddhi is the cleansing of the nadis. Nadis are the channels through which the tradition says prana, the vital breath, moves. This is the tradition's account, not anatomy. Mudras are seals, practices that hold or direct that breath. Pavana-kriya means the actions of pavana, the wind or breath. Together they name breath work in general. The verse gives no reason of its own. Its reason is the order. Posture comes first, because breath work asks for a body that sits quietly. It asks the practitioner to be at ease in the seat before turning to the breath. It describes no method here. Long holds and forced breathing can hurt, so these practices are learnt with a teacher, not from a page.

A weaver sits cross-legged at a handloom for hours. When his hips and back begin to complain, he can think of nothing else. He could not follow his breath even if he wished to. That ordinary fact is the sense in the verse's order. Most teachers today also settle the body before asking anything of the breath, and a seat that causes no pain does help attention stay put. Slow, quiet breathing is widely found to be calming. Beyond that, the old claims are the tradition's own. Nothing in physiology matches the nadis or their cleansing. Prana has no direct modern equivalent, though it overlaps loosely with breath and the felt sense of energy. The hut does not carry over unchanged. Breath work can bring light-headedness. Long holds and forced breathing are best avoided. People with heart, lung or blood pressure trouble, and anyone pregnant, need a doctor's word and a teacher's eye before trying them. The wisdom that carries over is the order: be steady first, and do not begin tired.
