Four Essential Asanas

Hatha Yoga Pradipika 1.33

Meaning · English

Eighty-four asanas have been taught by Shiva. From among them I take a set of four, the essence of the whole, and I will describe those.

Start with the words. Asana means a seat, from the root for sitting. Before it means any shape of the body, it means the place you sit. Chaturashiti is four and eighty, so eighty-four. Chatushka is a group of four. Sara-bhuta means become the sap or the core, the part that is left when the rest is set aside. So the verse speaks of a set of four that holds the core of a much larger list. The plain sense is short. The Pradipika says Shiva taught eighty-four asanas. Svatmarama, the author, does not claim to be the source. He names Shiva as the first teacher, which is how the manual places itself in a lineage. He then says he will not walk through all eighty-four. He will choose four and describe those. Why teach it this way? The text is a manual for practice, and a long catalogue would bury the one thing it wants asana to do, which is to give a steady seat for the work that follows. Choosing four says that the many shapes are not the point. The verse gives no further reason, and it does not say here which four. It only promises them. What it asks of a practitioner is a sense of proportion. A few seats, learnt well, are enough for this path. The verse does not ask for a collection of postures, and it makes no claim about what the four will do.

A man stands in a bookshop turning the pages of a yoga encyclopedia, with hundreds of poses and a photograph for each. He wonders whether he is meant to learn them all. The verse answers him in its own way, by calling eighty-four too many and keeping four. Today's mainstream understanding has little to say about the number itself. Eighty-four reads as a traditional round count, not a measured tally, and nothing in modern physiology says that any particular four postures are the essential ones. Attributing the list to Shiva is the tradition's account of where its teaching came from. It cannot be checked. What carries over is the idea of a short list. Doctors and movement teachers generally agree that a few things done regularly and comfortably serve a person better than a long repertoire done badly. What does not carry over without care is the floor. Sitting on the ground for long stretches can strain the knees, hips and lower back, especially if they are stiff or already sore. The sixteenth-century hut assumed a body used to sitting that way. Someone whose joints complain should stop at pain and ask a teacher before copying any seat from a page.
