Meaning · English
Posture is the first limb of hatha, so it is spoken of first. Let it be practised, for steadiness, for health, and for lightness in the limbs.
The verse opens with a reason for its own order. Hatha is the discipline the book is teaching, and the text counts it as having limbs, the way a body or a path has parts. Asana is the first of them, so it is taught first. The word asana means a seat, from the sense of sitting down and staying. It is the base the other practices rest on. The verse then says what asana is for, and names three things. The first is steadiness. This is the ability to stay in one place without being shaken, in the body and by extension in the mind. The second is health. The word means being without illness, and the Pradipika offers it as a plain aim, not as a cure for any named complaint. The third is lightness of the limbs, an ease and freedom in moving, the opposite of heaviness and stiffness. The verse gives no posture here. It does not say how to sit, how long, or on what. It says only why posture comes first and what the text hopes to gain from it. What it asks of a practitioner is to start with the body, to treat the seat as the foundation, and to judge the practice by whether the body becomes steadier, healthier and lighter.
A retired postman finds his knees stiff on the stairs and decides to start moving again. Today's mainstream view backs that instinct in general terms. Regular, moderate movement helps balance, strength, flexibility and everyday ease, and a person who can get up and down from the floor tends to stay independent. The verse's steadiness and lightness fit these ideas fairly well, though they are the tradition's words and not measurements. Its claim of health is broader and has to be read loosely. Physical activity is good for general health, but no posture should be treated as a cure for a named illness. The idea that posture comes first because it prepares the ground for the breath and the mind is the tradition's own account. Today's medicine neither confirms nor refutes it. A caution also carries over. Forcing the knees or hips into a seat they cannot yet take can injure them, and people with joint problems, recent injury or pregnancy do well to ask a qualified teacher before starting.
