Meaning · English
Eating too much, straining, talking too much, holding hard to rules, keeping company with crowds, and restlessness of mind: yoga is ruined by these six.
After describing the hut and the teacher's way, the Pradipika turns to what spoils practice. It names six causes, and the verse says plainly that yoga is destroyed by them. The first is eating more than hunger asks for. The second is effort that brings exhaustion: work or strain that wears the body down. The third is much talk, speech that runs on past need. The fourth is clinging to rules. The commentary reads this as taking up fixed observances, such as a cold-water bath at dawn, eating only at night, or living on fruit alone, and gripping them hard. The word is grasping, not keeping. The fifth is company of people. The commentary gives its own reason: such company breeds desire and the like. The sixth is restlessness, a flickering, unsteady mind that cannot stay put. The reason the text gives is one of obstruction. These six block the practice, so it fails. Nothing in the list is a vice in the usual sense. Food, work, speech, discipline and company are ordinary things, and the fault lies in the excess or the grip. Even a good rule can become a fault when held rigidly. For a practitioner, the verse asks for a life with fewer of these pulls running through it. Taken to the letter, hard fasting or cold bathing can injure the body, and the verse itself warns against rigid clinging to them.
A man is a week into a strict new routine: cold showers at dawn, one meal a day, a long session every evening. He is tired, short with his family, and thinking about food all day. A family doctor would recognise the picture and would not be surprised. Plain overeating is well known to bring heaviness and discomfort, and a full stomach makes bending and sitting harder. Exertion past what the body can recover from leaves people drained and prone to injury, and rest matters as much as effort. Rigid, extreme rules are often harder to keep than moderate ones, and strict fasting or cold exposure can be unsafe for some people. On this point the verse and current advice agree. On speech and company, modern understanding does not agree. Talking and being with others are generally good for mood and health, and isolation is a risk of its own. The verse reflects a particular hut-dwelling discipline, not a general rule for everyone. A restless, scattered mind does make steady practice difficult, and people notice this readily. What the tradition says about yoga being destroyed is its own claim, not something that can be measured.
