Narada Goes to Sanatkumara

Chandogya Upanishad 7.1

The story · English

Narada came to Sanatkumara and said, "Teach me, sir." Sanatkumara did not begin at once. "First tell me what you already know," he said. "Then I will tell you what lies beyond it." So Narada told him. He knew the Rig-Veda, the Yajur-Veda, the Sama-Veda, and the Atharva-Veda as the fourth. He knew the legends and the ancient lore as a fifth, and the Veda of the Vedas. He knew the rites for the ancestors, mathematics, omens, the reckoning of time, logic, statecraft, the knowledge of the gods and of sacred learning, the lore of spirits, the science of ruling, astrology, snake-charming and the fine arts. "I know the sacred words, sir," he said, "but I do not know the Soul. I have heard that whoever knows the Soul crosses over sorrow. I am in sorrow. Take me across."

Sanatkumara said, "Everything you have learned is only a name. The four Vedas, the legends, the mathematics, the snake-charming, all of it is Name. Honour Name. Whoever honours Name as Brahman is free as far as Name reaches." Narada asked, "Is there anything more than Name, sir?" "There is." "Then tell me." "Speech is more than Name. Speech is what makes all those subjects known, and heaven and earth, wind and space, water and heat, gods and people, beasts and birds, grass and trees, down to worms, flies and ants. If there were no speech, no one would know right from wrong, true from false, good from bad, pleasant from unpleasant. Speech makes all of it known. Honour Speech." Narada listened, and then asked the same thing again. "Is there more than Speech, sir?"

"Mind is more than Speech," said Sanatkumara. "A closed hand holds two acorns, or two berries, or two dice-nuts. Mind holds Speech and Name in the same way. When a person has it in mind to learn the sacred words, he learns them. When he has it in mind to want children and cattle, this world and the next, he wants them. The self is Mind. The world is Mind. Brahman is Mind." "Is there more than Mind?" "Conception is more. When a person forms a conception, then he holds it in mind, then he speaks, and he speaks in names. Heaven and earth were formed through Conception, and wind and space, water and heat. From them comes rain, from rain food, from food living beings, and from them sacred words, sacred works, and the world itself."

Narada asked again, and Sanatkumara said, "Thought is more than Conception. When a person thinks, then he conceives, then he holds it in mind, then he speaks. That is why, if someone who knows a great deal has no thought, people say, 'He is nobody, whatever he knows. If he really knew, he would not be so thoughtless.' But if someone who knows little has thought, people want to listen to him. Honour Thought." "Is there more than Thought?" "Meditation is more. The earth meditates, in a way. So do the sky and the heavens, the waters and the mountains, gods and people. Whoever becomes great here has a share in the reward of meditation. The small ones are quarrellers, gossips, slanderers. Honour Meditation." And Narada, patient and unsatisfied, asked whether there was more.

"Understanding is more than Meditation," said Sanatkumara. "By Understanding a person understands the Vedas and every science, heaven and earth, right and wrong, food and drink, this world and the next." "Is there more?" "Strength is more. One strong person makes a hundred people of understanding tremble. When a person grows strong, he rises. Rising, he serves a teacher. Serving, he becomes a pupil, and then he sees, hears, thinks, perceives, acts and understands. By Strength the earth stands, and the sky, and the mountains, gods and people." "Is there more?" "Food is more. If someone goes ten days without eating, he may still live, but he no longer sees or hears or thinks or understands. Let food come in, and he sees, hears, thinks and understands again. Honour Food."

"Water is more than Food," Sanatkumara went on. "When the rains are poor, living things fall sick with worry that food will be scarce. When the rains are good, they are glad, thinking food will be plenty. This earth, the air, the sky, gods and people, beasts and birds, grass and trees, worms and flies and ants, all of it is water made solid. Honour Water." "Is there more?" "Heat is more. It seizes the wind and warms the air, and people say, 'It is hot, it is burning hot, it will surely rain.' Lightning darts across the sky, thunder rolls, and they say, 'It will surely rain.' Heat shows the sign first, then lets the water fall." "And more than Heat?" "Space. Sun, moon, stars, lightning and fire are all in Space. Through Space we call, hear, answer. In Space we are born."

"Memory is more than Space," said Sanatkumara. "Gather many people who have no memory, and they would not hear anyone, or think, or understand. Let them remember, and they hear, think, understand. By memory a person knows his own children and his own cattle." "Is there more?" "Hope is more. Lit by hope, memory learns the sacred words, and a person does sacred works and longs for children and cattle, this world and the next." "Is there more?" "Life, the breath, is more. As spokes are fixed in a hub, everything is fixed on the breath. Your father is breath, your mother, brother, sister, teacher. Speak harshly to any of them and people say, 'Shame on you, you have killed your father.' But once the breath has left them, you may push their bodies into the fire with a poker, and no one says that."

"Breath is all of these," said Sanatkumara. "Whoever sees this becomes one who speaks beyond. If people tell him so, he should not deny it. But the one who truly speaks beyond is the one who speaks with Truth." Narada did not ask whether there was more this time. He said, "Then I want to speak with Truth." "Then you must want to understand Truth." "I do, sir." "A person speaks the truth only when he understands. So you must want to understand Understanding." "I do." "One understands only after thinking." "Then I want to understand Thought." "One thinks only when one has faith." "Then Faith." "One has faith only when one grows steady in it, and one grows only by acting, and one acts only when there is joy in it." Each time, Narada said, "Sir, I want to understand that."

"Joy is the same as the Fullness," said Sanatkumara. "There is no joy in what is small. Only the Fullness is joy. So you must want to understand the Fullness." "Sir, I want to understand the Fullness." "Where a person sees nothing else, hears nothing else, understands nothing else, that is the Fullness. Where a person sees something other, that is the small. The Fullness does not die. The small dies." Narada pressed once more. "This Fullness, sir, what does it rest on?" "On its own greatness," said Sanatkumara, "or perhaps not even on greatness. People here call cows and horses greatness, elephants and gold, servants and wives, fields and houses. I do not mean that. I do not mean that. In that kind of greatness, one thing is always resting on something else."

"The Fullness is below and above, west and east, south and north. It is this whole world. Now say it as 'I': I am below, I am above, I am in every direction, I am this whole world. Now say it as the Soul: the Soul is below and above and in every direction. The Soul is this whole world. Whoever sees this and delights in the Soul is his own master, free in every world. For him breath, hope, memory, space, heat, water, food, strength, understanding, thought, mind, speech and name all rise from the Soul." There is a verse for it: the one who sees does not see death, or sickness, or pain; he sees the All. Pure food makes a pure nature, and then the knots of the heart come loose. And to Narada, his stains wiped away, Sanatkumara showed the far shore of darkness. People call Sanatkumara Skanda.
