Happiness Has No Edge
Chandogya Upanishad 7.23.1
Meaning · English
The vast is happiness; the small holds none. Only the vast is happiness, and the vast is what to understand. 'Sir, I want to understand the vast.'
Sanatkumara ties happiness to one thing: fullness, which he calls bhūmā, the boundless, with nothing outside it. Its opposite is the small, anything limited, anything with an edge. He says the small cannot hold real happiness at all. Happiness does not come from collecting small things. It is the boundless itself. That is why the boundless is the one thing worth understanding. Narada has already studied everything else, and he answers simply that this is what he now wants to learn.
Fill a small bowl under a running tap. Once the water reaches the rim, it spills, because the bowl can only hold so much before it is full and losing water. Joy kept in limited things works like that bowl, always pressing against its rim. The boundless has no rim, so nothing spills and nothing is missing.
