Meaning · English

A person in health should rise in the hour of Brahma, to guard the span of life. Having first given thought to the body, let him then carry out the rules of cleansing.

Vagbhata begins the day before the sun does. Brahma muhurta, the hour of Brahma, is the quiet stretch before dawn. By the old reckoning a muhurta is forty-eight minutes, and this one falls roughly in the hour and a half before sunrise. The person he speaks to is svastha, someone already well. The rule is meant to keep health, not to drag the sick out of bed. The reason he gives is short: to guard ayus, the whole span of life. Then comes sharira chinta, literally 'thought for the body.' It means noticing what the body needs on waking: chiefly sensing whether last night's food has been digested. After that comes shaucha: relieving the bowel and bladder and washing clean. Elsewhere, in its first chapter, the text gives the last part of the night to vata, the body's principle of movement and lightness. Later explainers see in this why waking and letting go come easily then, though this verse does not say so. What the teaching asks for is an ordered start: rise early, listen to the body first, then relieve yourself and wash.

1. Tonight, go to bed twenty minutes earlier, so that tomorrow you can rise twenty minutes earlier without losing sleep. If you are ill, pregnant, elderly or up at night with a child, keep the sleep you need. 2. On waking, leave your phone where it is for the first ten minutes. 3. Go to the toilet before anything else, unhurried and without straining. Notice whether you feel hungry or still full from last night. 4. Wash your hands, face and mouth with plain water, slowly, before the day begins.

Today's sleep medicine agrees with part of this. Waking at the same time on workdays and weekends helps set the body clock, and daylight soon after waking strengthens that rhythm. Morning is also when many people's bowels move most easily, because waking and the first food or drink stir the gut. Making unhurried room for that fits ordinary physiology. Washing hands after the toilet is one of the best-founded habits in all of public health. Modern understanding parts company over the fixed hour. People differ in their natural chronotype, and there is no good evidence that a particular pre-dawn window lengthens life by itself. Total sleep matters more, so rising early helps only if bedtime moves earlier too. Vata, as a moving principle within the body, has no direct modern match.
