Meaning · English
In the morning, and after eating, chew a tooth-stick of arka, banyan, khadira, karanja, kakubha and the like: soft at the tip, astringent, pungent and bitter, as thick as the tip of the little finger, straight, twelve finger-widths long, without hurting the gums. One with indigestion, vomiting, breathlessness, cough, fever or facial palsy, or with thirst, mouth sores, or disease of the heart, eyes, head or ears, should not use it.
Vagbhata describes the old Indian toothbrush: a fresh twig that is chewed. Traditionally, one end is chewed until it frays into soft bristles, and the chewed end is then rubbed over the teeth. He names the trees: arka, banyan, khadira, karanja, kakubha (also called arjuna), and others like them. The twig should taste astringent, pungent and bitter. It should be soft at the tip, about as thick as the little fingertip, straight, and twelve finger-widths long. It is used on rising and after meals, and the gums must not be hurt. Vagbhata gives no reason for the three tastes. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that these tastes dry and scrape, and that kapha, the heavy, moist principle in the body, gathers in the mouth overnight and after food. He also lists who should not use the stick: people with indigestion, vomiting, breathlessness, cough, fever, facial palsy, thirst, mouth sores, or illness of the heart, eyes, head or ears. He gives no reason for this list either. A fair reading is that chewing and scraping would strain or irritate someone in these states. The teaching asks for a small daily habit done gently, and it allows that habit to be set aside when the body is unwell.
1. Tomorrow on waking, brush for about two minutes with a light hand. Angle the bristles toward the gumline and move in small strokes, not hard scrubbing. 2. After your main meal today, rinse your mouth well with water. If you can, clean your teeth gently a few minutes later. 3. Tonight, check your gums in the mirror. If they bleed or feel sore, use a lighter touch for the next few days. 4. Do not chew twigs from plants you do not know. Some, such as arka, have irritating sap.
Today's dental advice agrees with much of this. Teeth are cleaned by mechanical rubbing, which removes the sticky film of plaque that builds up through the day and night. A soft tip and a gentle hand matter. Hard scrubbing can wear the gums back and expose the roots. Cleaning in the morning and after food also fits ordinary advice, and dentists generally recommend brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Chewing sticks are still used in many parts of the world. Some plant sticks may add mild effects of their own, but a modern dentist would not treat a twig as a replacement for regular brushing. The three tastes as a reason for cleaning have no modern match. Dentists would not tell a person with fever or heart disease to stop cleaning their teeth. Mouth care usually matters more during illness, done gently, though vomiting or a sore mouth can make it hard.
