Meaning · English
Let a person oil the body every day. It takes away aging, weariness and vata. It brings clear sight, nourishment, long life, sound sleep, good skin and firmness of body. Apply it especially to the head, the ears and the feet. Oiling is not for those gripped by kapha, those just purified, or those with undigested food.
Abhyanga is rubbing oil into the skin, and Vagbhata places it among the things done every day. He names what it takes away. Jara is the wear of aging. Shrama is tiredness. Vata is the dosha of movement, which Ayurveda describes as dry, light, cold and restless. He then names what it gives: clear eyes, a well-nourished body, long life, good sleep, fine skin and a firm, sturdy frame. Three places get extra attention: the head, the ears and the feet. The verse gives no reason for choosing them. Then come the limits. Do not oil the body when kapha, the heavy, moist dosha, has the upper hand. Do not do it straight after the cleansing treatments. Do not do it while the last meal is still undigested. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that oil is heavy and moist, the opposite of vata. So it settles vata, but it would add to kapha and weigh on a weak agni, the digestive fire. What the verse asks is a few unhurried minutes of care each day, left out on days the body already feels heavy.
1. Tonight, before bed, rub a few drops of a plain cooking oil you already have into the soles of your feet for two minutes. Then wipe them or put on socks so you do not slip. 2. Tomorrow, before your bath, warm a little oil between your palms. Massage your scalp slowly for a minute or two, then wash as usual. 3. Gently rub the outer ears and the skin behind them. Put nothing inside the ear. 4. Leave it out on a morning when you feel heavy or congested, when your last meal still sits with you, or where the skin is broken or irritated.
Parts of this sit comfortably with what a family doctor would say. Putting oil on the skin keeps in moisture and eases dryness, especially in cold or dry weather. A reader far from India can follow that spirit and oil more in the dry months of their own climate. Slow massage is widely felt as calming, and a calmer evening often makes sleep easier. There is no good evidence that oiling the body slows aging, lengthens life or sharpens eyesight. Vata has no exact modern match, though its dryness overlaps with dry skin. Waiting until a meal has settled is simply comfortable. Some cautions are plain. Oiled feet and bathroom floors cause falls. Oil can clog acne-prone skin. Nothing should go into an ear that is painful, discharging or has a damaged eardrum.
