Exercise to Half Strength

Meaning · English
Lightness, the capacity for work, a kindled digestive fire, the wearing away of fat, and limbs firm and well-defined: these arise from exercise. One with disorders of vata and pitta, a child, an old person and one with indigestion should give it up. It is to be practised to half one's strength by the strong, who eat unctuous food.
Vagbhata lists five gifts of exercise. The body feels light. It is able for its work. Agni, the digestive fire that turns food into the body, burns brighter. Stored fat, medas, wears down. And the limbs grow firm and compact, each part clearly shaped. Then he names who should set exercise aside. These are anyone ill with a disorder of vata (the principle of movement and dryness) or of pitta (the principle of heat), a child, an old person, and someone whose food is still undigested. Those who may exercise are the strong who eat unctuous (oily) food. Even they go only to half their strength. The verse gives no reason for these limits. In this system's terms, exertion dries and heats the body, so it stirs vata and pitta further. The young and the old have less reserve to spend. An unfinished meal needs the fire for itself. Oily food answers exercise's dryness. What Vagbhata asks for is steady effort, measured against the body's own strength. Half strength is a measure of effort, not of time.
1. Choose a time today when your last meal is two or three hours behind you, such as mid-morning or late afternoon, before dinner. 2. Walk briskly, climb stairs or do simple bodyweight movements for fifteen to twenty minutes. 3. Keep it to half your strength: stop while you can still speak in full sentences and have energy left over. 4. Make your next meal a proper one, with a little oil or ghee in it. If you are ill, pregnant or recovering, ask your doctor first how much is right for you.
Much of this matches what a family doctor would say. Regular movement raises energy, sharpens appetite, helps reduce body fat alongside sensible eating, and builds firmer muscle. Exercising on a full stomach often brings cramps and discomfort, so waiting after a meal is sound advice. Half strength resembles today's moderate intensity, the level at which you can still talk. Doctors recommend it for most people, and they also warn that overtraining brings fatigue and injury. Here the modern view parts ways with the text. Children are now encouraged to play actively every day. Older adults are urged to keep moving and to build strength, with sensible care. The advice on rich food matches the modern need for enough energy and protein, but there is no modern rule that the food must be oily. Vata and pitta have no direct modern match.
