In the cold season and in spring, exercise to that measure; at other times, only lightly. Having exercised, press and rub the body all over, as feels pleasant. Thirst, wasting, breathless attacks, bleeding, fatigue, weariness, cough, fever and vomiting arise from too much exercise. Exercise, waking at night, long walks, sex, laughter, talking and other rash acts: one who overdoes them perishes, like a lion dragging an elephant.
For the strong who eat rich food, Vagbhata has set exercise at half one's strength. In the cold months and in spring, use that measure; at other times, go only lightly. The text pictures India's year: strength runs highest in winter, and Ayurveda explains elsewhere that agni, the digestive fire, burns strongest then, while in spring kapha, the heavy, moist principle gathered over winter, starts to melt and wants moving. Heat and rains leave the body weaker. A reader far from India can follow the weather they live in rather than the calendar. After exercise, the body is pressed and rubbed all over, anusukham, at a pressure that feels good. Too much exercise brings thirst, wasting, pratamaka (a breathless attack), raktapitta (bleeding disorders, such as from the nose or mouth), shrama (tiredness from effort), klama (weariness with no effort behind it), cough, fever and vomiting. Late nights, long walks, sex, laughter, talking and other rash excesses work the same way. A lion that tries to drag an elephant is ruined by the load. The teaching asks for strength spent within its means.
1. Before exercising today, notice the weather. If it is cool, do your usual walk or workout at moderate effort; if it is hot or muggy, keep it to a gentle twenty minutes. 2. Stop while you could still hold a conversation, not when you are spent. 3. Afterwards, take three or four minutes to press and rub your arms, legs, shoulders and back with your palms, as firmly as feels good. 4. Tonight, choose one thing you tend to overdo, such as staying up or talking late, and end it at a set hour.
Today's advice agrees on the main point. Hard exercise in heat and humidity raises the risk of dehydration and heat illness, so easing off in hot weather is good sense. Training beyond what the body can recover from is well recognised: lingering tiredness, poor sleep, frequent colds and flagging appetite are its usual signs, close to what Vagbhata calls shrama and klama. Extreme effort can bring thirst, nausea and vomiting. Raktapitta and pratamaka have no single modern match, and nothing suggests that laughing or talking a lot harms the body. Cold air often triggers breathlessness in people with asthma, so winter effort does not suit everyone. Rubbing tired muscles feels good and may ease soreness, though its measurable effects are modest. Anyone with heart or lung trouble, or who is pregnant, does best to ask their doctor how much is right.
