Rubbing the body down removes kapha, melts away fat, firms the limbs, and is excellent for clearing the skin. Bathing kindles digestion, is good for virility, lengthens life, and gives vigour and strength. It overcomes itching, dirt, weariness, sweat, drowsiness, thirst, burning and sin. Hot water poured over the lower body brings strength. The same poured over the head takes away the strength of the hair and the eyes.
Vagbhata names two parts of the daily routine: rubbing the body, then bathing. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that the rubbing, called udvartana, is done briskly against the lie of the hair, often with dry powders or pastes. He gives it four effects. It clears kapha, the principle of heaviness, oiliness and stillness in the body. It melts fat. It firms the limbs. It is excellent for clearing the skin. The bath does more. It kindles agni, the digestive fire that turns food into the body, so appetite returns. It is good for virility. It lengthens life. It gives energy and strength. It ends eight troubles: itching, grime, tiredness, sweat, heavy drowsiness, thirst, a feeling of burning, and sin. The last is a moral word, not a medical one. To him the bath cleanses more than the skin. Then comes a careful rule about heat. Hot water poured over the body below the head (the lower body) builds strength. Hot water over the head weakens the hair and the eyes.
1. Before your bath today, rub your arms, legs and trunk with dry palms or a rough towel for two or three minutes. Use firm upward strokes. Skip any skin that is broken or sore. 2. Bathe with warm water on your body. Keep the water on your head and face lukewarm or cool. The text advises against bathing just after a meal, or during diarrhoea, indigestion or a cold. 3. Keep the water comfortably warm, never scalding. Take extra care if you are elderly, pregnant or have heart trouble. 4. Afterwards, sit for a minute. Notice whether you feel lighter and more awake, and whether you are hungry.
Much of this matches what a family doctor would say. Brisk rubbing lifts dead skin and warms the skin for a while, and skin can look clearer after it. There is no good evidence that rubbing melts body fat or firms muscle. Only exercise and diet change those. A warm bath washes away sweat and dirt, which often ease itching. It loosens tired muscles, and it can leave a person fresher and more alert. Some feel hungrier afterwards. There is no evidence that bathing lengthens life or adds strength to virility. Kapha and sin have no modern match. The warning about hot water on the head holds up in part. Very hot water strips the scalp's natural oils and can leave hair dry, and it can sting the eyes. Very hot baths can also make some people dizzy or faint.
