Food, Urges and Illness

Meaning · English

When the last meal is digested, eat what is wholesome, and in measure. Do not force the urges by strain. One who feels an urge should not turn to other work. Do not go on without first overcoming a curable illness.

Vagbhata packs four rules into one line. First, eat when the previous meal has been digested. The word jirna means worn down, used up. The food should be hita, good for you, and mita, measured, not eaten to the edge of fullness. Second, do not strain to bring on a natural urge, such as passing stool or urine, before it comes on its own. Third, when an urge has come, do not put it aside to finish some other task. Attend to it. Fourth, do not carry on with life's other business while a curable illness is left untreated. The verse gives no reasons. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that agni, the digestive fire, must finish one meal before it can take the next, and food laid on undigested food sits badly. Urges forced or held back are said to unsettle vata, the principle of movement in the body. An illness left alone tends to settle in. Together the rules ask a person to let the body's own timing set the pace of the day.

1. Before your next meal today, check whether the last one feels finished: a light stomach and real hunger. If it does not, wait a little or eat less. 2. At lunch, serve a plate you can finish, and stop while you still feel comfortable. 3. When you need the toilet during work, go within a few minutes instead of finishing the task first. 4. In the bathroom, let things happen without pushing hard. 5. If a small illness is running, rest this evening or book an appointment instead of working through it.

Much of this sits well with what a good family doctor would say. Eating when truly hungry and in moderate portions matches mainstream advice on listening to appetite. There is no modern test for a meal being fully digested, though. People with diabetes, or anyone taking medicine with food, should keep the meal times their doctor gives them. Doctors also advise against straining on the toilet, which is linked with piles and can be risky with some heart conditions. Putting off the toilet as a habit is linked with constipation and bladder trouble. Treating an illness early, and resting, helps recovery and keeps infections from spreading to others. Agni maps loosely onto digestion and appetite. Vata, as a principle of movement, has no direct modern match.
