Meaning · English
'As my nights and days go by, what am I now?' Who keeps this ever in mind does not come to sorrow. The day so spent, when night's first watch has passed, at home, remember gods, sages and teachers, then lie down. Such, in brief, is right conduct; living it brings long life, health, prosperity, good name and lasting worlds.
Vagbhata ends the day with a question a person puts to themselves: as the nights and days slip past, what kind of person am I now? Smriti means remembrance, keeping something present in the mind. Whoever keeps this question near at all times, he says, does not become a sharer in sorrow. That is the verse's own reason. Then comes bedtime. The night was counted in watches, each yama about three hours. When the first watch after dusk has passed and one is at home, one calls to mind the gods, the rishis or sages, and one's teachers, and then lies down. The whole daily routine is summed up as achara, right conduct. Its fruits are named one by one: ayus, a long life; arogya, health; aishvarya, prosperity and standing; yashas, a good name; and lasting worlds beyond this one. What it asks of a life is steady and small. Look honestly at each day as it closes, remember those to whom you owe your learning, and sleep at a settled hour.
1. Tonight, before bed, sit somewhere quiet for two or three minutes. Ask yourself how today went and what sort of person you were in it. Name one thing to keep and one to change. 2. Set a bedtime about three hours after sunset, and aim to be home and winding down by then. 3. As you lie down, spend a minute calling to mind one teacher or elder who shaped you, and whatever you hold sacred, if anything. Then let the day go and sleep.
A short review at the close of the day is close to what doctors and therapists mean by evening reflection or journaling. Many people find it settles the mind before sleep. For someone prone to worry it can slide into going over and over the same thing, so it works best kept brief and kind. A regular bedtime with a calm wind-down fits well with today's understanding of the body clock and good sleep habits. Modern advice stresses keeping the same hours and getting enough sleep, more than any particular hour. Dusk moves with the season and with latitude, so a reader far from India can follow the spirit, an evening of a few settled hours, rather than the clock. People who work nights, or who are ill, pregnant or caring for infants, will need to fit sleep around their own lives. Prosperity, fame and lasting worlds are moral and religious promises that medicine has no way to test.
